Computers and editing software are becoming much more powerful and can do wonders in extracting the best out of digital data that is not readily seen, we also (photographers) are gaining more and more experience as we move on, and becoming better, or maybe not, in editing our work.

It would be, I think, nice to take an old photo of one of your DPC entries and reedit in using advanced rules and show us what can be done.

I'll start

IN 2007 IN 2011 or this

Please don't take this wrong...don't you hate when someone starts a reply like that?

But your original image is far better then the newer edit.

Sorry but that's the first thing that popped into my head too.

I'm in the middle, I like some parts of the new edit (the water and the kids, although the water needs toned down), but I do not like the new crop, nor the foreground rocks that are far too bright... Somewhere between the two is the idea image, I think.

Shadows

Light is the Left Hand of Darkness

A whitewashed canvas
is not a picture of light.
Shade describes it. Shadows
depict what they deny,
build what they block
and outline what they obscure,
when darkness is increased by one.

Ok if you say so

I join the 'like the first one better' group. It is beautiful, and very likely unimproveable.

I like the direction, lighting on the foreground rocks, and natural quality of all the rocks in the first one. However, the colors and general light/dark balance on the second one are better, as well as the brightness of the kid.

I like the third one best!

I have to say, all three versions are stunning.

I understand the re-edit. It makes sense if you were looking at a market for glossier images but I too prefer the original. I just like the play of shadows a lot more.
