Hi!
I was wondering if someone here could help me. I was at Hunt's Camera the other day, and a staff member told me that the FAA has recently changed their restrictions to allow bags that are *only* for camera equipment as an "Extra" bag, and not counted as a carry-on. Meaning, you can have one carry-on, a purse or laptop, and a camera bag. Has anyone else heard this? I have been looking on the web and can't seem to find anything saying that. Thanks for your help ( I am leaving tomorrow for a trip home to Hawaii!) :)

I haven't heard anything about it, but what I might do is put your camera bag inside a carry on suitcase and shove everything else in there too... purse, laptop, etc. Then, you can always annoy your neighbor and get up to get your things from the overhead bin when the plane is steady flying. That's what I am going to do next week when I fly from CA to PA.

I remember reading that this true, as a guideline - however, none of the carriers actually have to let you have that extra carry-on and may force you to check it or not get on the flight. Just because the FAA says they are allowed to let you do it, doesn't mean they will.

It also varies quite often from gate to gate, even with the airline's approval. It would be best not to depend on it, or if you are, have written confirmation from the _airline_ (not the FAA, or not only the FAA) to demonstrate that you are allowed to do it.

You are correct - but it was not "recently" - but several months ago.

From American Airlines web site:

FAA security measures limit customers on all AA flights to one carry-on bag plus one personal item.
--------------------------------------
Personal Items
Personal items include the following:
Purse

Briefcase

Laptop

Small book-bag style backpack

Other similar items that do not exceed 36 linear inches (length + width + height) will be allowed such as a small tote bag or shoulder bag.

Additional items that will be allowed above and beyond the restrictions listed above include:
Outer garments such as coats/wraps/hats

Approved safety seat for lap or ticketed child

Umbrella stroller for lap or ticketed child

Diaper bag for lap or ticketed child

Book or newspaper

Bistro sized or smaller bag of food that is consumable
Assistive devices for passengers such as wheelchairs, walkers and CPAP machines
Therapeutic oxygen provided by the airline

One way to tweak the airline rules is to buy something at the airport and get a bag from the store to put extra items in. They want to encourage people to buy from airport vendors, so they will almost always let you on with the shopping bag in addition to your carryons.

I'm also from Hawaii, and when I left home last time, I bought leis for all my friends at school from the airport lei stand, and carried the *large* shopping bag with me all the way back to Wisconsin. The stewardess on one flight even offered to let me stow it in the first class coat closet so the leis wouldn't be crushed!

what about...no purse...a camera bag...and a laptop bag...is that allowed? Can I claim my camera bag as a purse and still have a carry on bag? I did this when flying to new york..but now I must think of Jamaica...curious of the rules and how I will manage these items.

never mind...just saw photoms post. :)

I would claim it as a purse. Put your wallet, lipstick, money, mirror, sunglasses, airline ticket and whatever else in there and say... this IS my purse. Are they going to take that away from you? No. Are they going to put your laptop in with the luggage below? No! I get away with this all the time and they never question me. You should be fine. :)

Ask Mieka, who got her Nikon D1 put in the hold and smashed up if they'll force you to check bags or not...

ugh...I would opt for smashing up the laptop. Or..perhaps I just invest in extra memory. Is there a nice doohicky thingamajig for storing images while traveling? Something that holds more than one or two gigs?

You can all thank the PPA (Professional Photographers of America) lobbyists for that carry-on provision.

Search the forums for "digital wallet" or X-drive. Basically these are card-reader/hard drive combos, typically 10-40GB; some also work as MP3/video jukeboxes and most as external hard drives.

Here's a neat trick - take your cameras in a pistol case. You will get extra attention and may even get to cut in line. I skipped a two hour line once doing this. They escort you to the front and ask you to open the case. "It's a camera, no big deal." "Thank you. Enjoy your flight."

I have an ipod. It holds 15 gigs. I am not sure how to get photos into it though. I haven't looked at accessories yet.
