Ive just started using photomatix to make some HDR photos. The first few were fine, but now whenever I process the images, they are darker than what I saw in the tonemapping. Im not sure what im doing wrong here...

So, I think what you're saying is that after you merge and tone-map your photos in Photomatix they look one way, and after you hit the process button and save they look darker in another program? That shouldn't happen. Can you be a little more specific?

I've found that in many programs, the preview image looks a bit different from the processed shot.

So this is what im dealing with. The image on the left, is what it looks like while tonemapping, and on the right is what the processed image looks like.

What program are you viewing your processed image in, and what format are you saying it out of Photomatix in? I always save my tone-mapped files out of Photomatix as 16 bit tiff files, and I've never had them appear darker as you are seeing in your examples.

This is odd, so now I'm curious as to what's going on here as well. The program you're viewing the file in that makes it darker...are there any settings that maybe be getting applied to it when opened or imported? Lightroom can be set to apply a certain preset when imported, and even when you don't use that option certain adjustments are made to make the photo look better. If it is Lightroom make sure no settings...ie. presets are being applied when you import it, and you should have a preset that comes with LR that is titled something like zeroed which sets all the sliders to zero or default position. Any more info you can add would helpful no matter how insignificant you might think it is.

You know, mine does that when I dont choose a processing type then hit cancel, it gives me just a composite shot, that I can save.. have done that a couple times.

I had a similar issue... made sure I updated to current version and it went away.

DCNUTTER: the image im viewing after is still in photomatix, immediatly after processing. This is what it looks like before I even save it. It seems to just be a matter of turning the brightness up after in photoshop, but its still annoying. The contrast needs to be bumped after aswell.

Yeah, he's talking about what the preview looks like. It's noted in various places that the preview may not be exactly correct, but I found that for some unknown reason my previews became utterly worthless spontaneously. I didn't do any hardware changes or anything. But the issue happily crawled back into the depths of my system once I updated, waiting to rear it's head later...
