Does anyone here have any experience with these 2 Cameras, I have my own opinions based on what information I have gathered but I am really interested to hear from those with hands on experience with these units, I haven't been able to find any information at all online about the new RePlay XD 1080 video camera. A race team that I work with is looking to purchase capture devices for data acquisition and they have been looking at both the RePlay Cameras and GoPro. I like the Design of the RePlay for mounting but I haven't seen what kinds of accesories are available or included and haven't seen anything at all in terms of image or video specs for the newer XD1080 model. I found a link to a page with some RePlay info, the www.REPLAYXD.com address seems to be corrupted or something. I think for myself I would lean very strongly towards the GoPro, it just seems to have much more to offer in terms of versatility and durability, I especially like the new LCD screen available.

I can vouch for the go pro durability. My friend in BC was snowboarding in glades. Camera was helmet mounted on the side. He made it between two tight trees. The camera did not! No damage what so ever though. Impressive, especially after watching the video footage.

My sister and I bought her fiancee and my friend a GoPro, and he loves it. We take it up for some great MTB singletrack and it makes great videos for DH too. Easy to use, and the lack of an LCD on his (wasn't available at time of purchase) isn't really that big of a deal, considering the fov. Conversion works a lot better some ways than others, so there was a slight learning curve, but results look great. Depending upon the options for the RePlay for mount and the fov, it should be noted that the wideangle GoPro seems like it is moving REALLY slow and suffers from odd distortion if mounted on a helmet. Chest mount works better for a more "representative" view, I think. Also, not using the maximum wide angle helps.

I currently own a GoPro, and I think it's a bit rubbish. The waterproof case if a nasty design feature, and very flimsy, so it can't cope on our racing car without wobble-vision. It's also a huge unit (inside the case), which is about as un-aerodynamic as it could possibly be. If you are doing less extreme sports like bicyling, snowboarding or jetskiing then maybe the GoPro is fine, but being fine at gentle sports doesn't mean it's actually very good, it just means it's good enough for simple tasks. A single seater racing car puts a bit more speed, load, vibration and windnoise through the whole thing.

The Replay XD HD units are going to be easier to mount, simpler, lighter, smaller, stronger and more aerodynamic.

The sound of both units will probably be rubbish though :)

The new HD units aren't due out for a couple of weeks (delayed due to the Japan crisis), but the specs are out there. I can email you the current spec sheet that Replay sent me a month or so ago. The accessories for the SD model will apparently all fit the HD models, and all the things like changeable lenses and such will be continued. I also gather the Replay will have remote start/stop controls available (unlike the GoPro, which concentrates on pointless things like TV screens or 3D systems), but also an interface that can talk to some dataloggers, so the camera turns on when your datalogger starts recording. Hurrah!!!

The Replay might be rubbish in the end. But given the specs, the design and the poor quality of the competition, it stands a good chance of easily being better than the crappy GoPro. I want to order a 720 version for me, and I'm trying to pursuade my teammate to get one or two too. I don't need 1080, and would much rather have the 60fps option of 720.

And no, I don't work for Replay. I'm not even a customer yet. I'm just excited by what looks like the best HD sports camera there will be.

Hi, has anyone got their hands on the replay yet? I have orderd one for delivery to UK but says 2-3 weeks wait. just wondering if this was a realistic estimate.

p.s the GoPro gets alot of exposure in press and promotions, its obviously a very popular choice (but also goes back to limited competition!). However ive never liked the fugly look of it and the way its mounted is not very descrete. Hence why I originaly bought a ContourHD.

The Contour was really good, the 60fps option in particular was just what I needed, but a big issue for me is that its just too wide an angle and creates a very fisheyed view. My reason for ordering the replay is largly based on it having much the same features, slick , slimlined looks but having a less fisheyed view.

thanks !

I ordered a Replay XD 1080 on June 10th, 2010 with the confirmation:

***Note: All Replay XD1080 pre-orders will start shipping June 27, 2011 ***

It is now July 25th and my card has not been charged (yet) nor is the company very helpful when you email requesting order status update. If you try to call them, there is a recording that says "All of our representatives are busy, please leave and message and we will call you back.." but no one ever calls back.

I think this camera will be awesome if the Replay can deliver on what they promise. So far it is not looking good.

I ordered a Replay XD1080 a month ago. bryanb is right. no answers to calls or emails. We used to call this vaporware. There are really only rumors that an XD1080 really exists.

what does this say about how they will support this cam if they cant even tell you when you'll get one??

I cant even figure out how to cancel it

I got mine quite early on, and it's brilliant. Superb footage, suberb quality, and it'll cope with low light and bright light very well (even better if the configuration is tweaked). But I did have a problem whereby one camera wouldn't turn on (a firmware issue that has now been resolved) and one that wouldn't turn off (not yet resolved, but I sent it back anyway). The sound quality is awesome - if anything, it's too loud (yet still no distortion or wind noise at over 130mph!).

Within TWO days they had shipped two replacement cameras out to me (from the US to the UK) and I'd fitted them to the cars. Brilliant, BRILLIANT customer service.

Pros - light, rugged, small, aerodynamic, easy to mount, simple to use, sound is excellent, video is amazing and no wobbliness in the camera itself (my home made mounts leave a bit to be desired though).
Cons - Erm. No built in screen (why would you want one?). No GPS (I can see that might be of interest to some). No bluetooth remote or iPhone connection (hardly a deal breaker for most).

This is not vapourware. This is the real deal. Only a fool would buy a GoPro now. Contour will still get some sales though because of GPS and Bluetooth.

I eventually want to mount a rugged, wide angle, HD camera to remote control planes/helicopters. Most videos I see these days are GoPro. But as I'm not to that point yet, I'm going to bookmark this thread even though it's a bit fishy with all the single-post newb members posting about this new and unavailable camera.

replayxd.com .... it looks very sweet! I'm going to have to compare the specs RE wide angle.

ETA:

Replay:
F3.1
110 degrees @ 1080P
135 degrees @ 960 - 720P

GoPro:
F2.8
127 degrees @ 1080P
170 degrees @ 960 - 720P

Too bad, I like the looks of that Replay, but the GoPro fits my wide angle needs. :-(

I believe Replay are planning on offering a lens adaptor kit, so you can use 37mm (I think it is) lenses on it - which means you could have very low FOV or massively fisheye 200° lenses.

Costs a bit, but gives a lot of options.

Really enjoying my Replay XD1080s. If the GoPro wasn't still worth some money I'd chuck it in the bin.

And I should stress - I'm not involved in any way with Replay other than as a satisfied paying customer. My website (which shows I'm in the UK) is dallara398.com, which might help you relax and stop thinking I'm some sort of internet bot that makes favourable forum postings about products.

"Only a fool would buy a GoPro now"

Or ... someone who wanted a waterproof camera to attach to a surfboard, water ski, etc.

The point is that these are are not entirely apples to apples cameras to compare. Each has it's features and it's place.

One may better fit your needs, but to consider someone else with different needs, a fool? Such statements put a strain on a forum contributor's credibility.

I bought a GoPro last weekend, partly because I could walk into a brick & mortar store and pick it up. I don't have much patience for mail order, especially living in Canada, where the postal service is unreliable and extremely slow.

I just watched this video which has an excellent split-screen comparison between the GoPro and Replay (as well as one other camera).

Hello. I just happened to be Googling for any forum threads anywhere on the Internets that have a reference to the product I'm not promoting or selling. I registered specifically to tell everyone which one not to buy, and to (in a totally unbiassed way) give them the contact details of where they can buy the one I'm strongly recommending (having first bad-mouthed the competition in a fair and objective manner)

I have no intention of voting on any entries, or entering any challenges, I just felt it was my duty as a citizen of the Internets to register on random forums and post my honest independent comments about whatever products you happen to be talking about.

Well, it's nice to know that the RePlay is available in Canada, at least. The guy who did the comparison video is going to do a low light as well, eventually.
