You've finished in post processing. What do you do next? How many files do you save each time? Do you do it every time?

I am very inconsistent about this. Especially when I am editing an image for dpc, I will sometimes first save it as a large file and then save it as the appropriate small file, other times I only do the latter. That becomes especially annoying when I need that same picture for something else later and then have to reedit the entire thing. Sometime soon I need to set up a system for this, for now sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.

I've learned to save the large file as a PSD file first, then resize for DPC as needed. Like Fiora, I kept sizing for challenges, then want it later full-sized! Sometimes I save as a TIFF in a different file, a Jpeg for challenge, as well as the full-size PSD file.

I've been saving a .jpeg for dpcprints and then resizing but have recently got myself in trouble because I have not been saving a .psd. Someone wanted a print that I did not have in a larger format so I found myself struggling to get the image exactly how I had it. Worked out fine but got me rethinking how I should save images.

I don't use TIFF, but otherwise I do the same. When I remember I also keep a record of my editing steps saved in File Info, which will come in useful if I ever have an entry that needs validation. Saving as PSD allows one to keep adjustment layers separate so one can tweak the image later if one wants to improve something without having to start over again.

I save the RAW file and back it up. After processing I save a TIFF file. I normally do not save the intermittent files used for things like DPC. If I make a specific print file for a certain size I also save those as a TIFF adding the print size to the file name.

I edit all full size... when I like it, I save it (as a PSD). Then I do a save as to my DPC directory. I close then reopen the DPC version, resize and then make any adjustments necessary.

For entries, I start with a full-sized PSD file ... when I'm done editing I save the composite as a full-sized TIFF, then re-size for DPC and save the smaller TIFF, and finally a JPEG after sharpening the re-sized file.

For prints, I'll start with the full-sized TIFF, then create a new PSD file with any needed type or borders. I usually save a TIFF and a JPEG of the print file, sometimes at different sizes or with multiple images ganged-up on one larger print.

Disk space it relatively cheap, and my files are still pretty small, so I try to not throw out any (image) files ...

I use LR3. It saves PP steps in a separate file so I have only one RAW file per image. If I use any NIK or Photomatix I keep the resulting TIFF file. For DPC I use LR3 Export with Mogrify plugin.

Check out using Lighhtroom3.Free downloads are easy .The program is abobe based ,so can be used with adobe photoshop cs5 or elements9 also older adobe versions. It imports files in DNG adobe format so all conversions are easily done with the originals saved in DNG longlife files. The system is based on setting up files so for example DPC challenge entries , set once then just access and send . The program records all changes done to a photo for any DPC challange.Just think import ,develop and send .Its always saved.

I generally shoot in RAW, especially for DPC. Most of the time I save the final processed file, including all layers, as a .psd file (I use Elements 6). Next I flatten the file and save as a full size .jpg, then I resize to DPC size at 72ppi, sharpen, and save that as a low resolution copy. For challenge submittal I then process the low resolution file with the Save for Web function at 300kb max size.

I end up with 3 or 4 files of the same processed photo, plus the RAW original. As an example, filenames would be:

DSC_6701.NEF (Nikon RAW format)
DSC_6701_edit1.psd
DSC_6701_edit1.jpg (generally no final sharpening until I print it)
DSC_6701_edit1_LR.jpg (sharpened for web, generally Adamus method)
DSC_6701_edit1_SFW.jpg (if low resolution file is >300kb)

Takes a lot of disck space, but I can later easily modify the processing with the.psd file, I can print the full size .jpg, and I can upload the low resolution files to the web.
