Overall I am very negative about US cable news networks. All of them. Journalism has become a dead profession. So I was quite impressed when I tuned into Al Jazeera English to get news about the turmoil in Egypt. Maybe this is a good chance to ask people if they have alternative newsfeeds that they enjoy for actual journalism rather than editorial and analysis. CNN International? BBC? Do these have feeds online?

BBC has World Service which you can get anywhere. They also have a 24 hour news channel but I don't know where that's available.

I've always found BBC News to be excellent and unbiased, apart from when it comes to England competing in sporting events :)

Egypt Shuts Down Al Jazeera

Originally posted by Al Jazeera:

The Egyptian authorities are revoking the Al Jazeera Network's licence to broadcast from the country, and will be shutting down its bureau office in Cairo, state television has said.

"The information minister [Anas al-Fikki] ordered ... suspension of operations of Al Jazeera, cancelling of its licences and withdrawing accreditation to all its staff as of today," a statement on the official Mena news agency said on Sunday.

In a statement, Al Jazeera said it strongly denounces and condemns the closure of its bureau in Cairo by the Egyptian government. The network received notification from the Egyptian authorities on Sunday morning.

"Al Jazeera has received widespread global acclaim for their coverage on the ground across the length and breadth of Egypt," the statement said.

An Al Jazeera spokesman said that the company would continue its strong coverage regardless.

"Al Jazeera sees this as an act designed to stifle and repress the freedom of reporting by the network and its journalists," the statement said.

"In this time of deep turmoil and unrest in Egyptian society it is imperative that voices from all sides be heard; the closing of our bureau by the Egyptian government is aimed at censoring and silencing the voices of the Egyptian people.

"Al Jazeera assures its audiences in Egypt and across the world that it will continue its in-depth and comprehensive reporting on the events unfolding in Egypt."

Al-Jazeera is disgusting in my opinion. CNN, Fox news and BBC are not perfect, but they don't have the same level of bullsh!t and lies like Al-Jazeera.

99.999% of all news is bullshit. There's no such thing as unbiased reporting. There never was, and as long as people are involved, there probably never will be.

These days I get most of my news over the radio -- I feel it is more basic and less sensationalized without the pictures and graphics, and it's not that hard to tell from someone's voice when the words represent somewhat less than the real situation.

Honestly I do too, but sometimes you want to see with your eyes what's going on. A picture, of course, is worth a thousand words. :)

I regularly listen to the BBC world service via their website. I found that they are quite unbiased, although extremely focused on England and their former colonies. Also, they focus only on the most important event on each place so can't cover too much for each country. But they also have special channels that transmit only news of the states so that might be more complete that the general world service. Their have quite a lot of options on their radio website, BBC.

You bet there is, a huge difference actually. On the English version, you rarely hear "facts" such as that US soldier are systematically and intentionally killing innocent civilians in Iraq, that Muslims are being persecuted in the US and Europe much worse than any discrimination against Christians in the middle-east, and that Israel actually deserves to be wiped off the map.

As I am writing this, the Arabic version mentioned that the US shipped weapons to the Egyptian police to kill the demonstrators and that Israel may had sent snipers inside Egypt to help with the killing also. My favorite report was last month where it was discovered that the sharks that attacked tourists in the red sea were trained by the Israeli Mossad specially for that purpose.

As silly as it sounds, many people in the middle east do believe in this crap. Luckily, I escaped the country before my first brain-washing session.

MHz Worldview is a network carried by KCSM-TV -- a PBS affiliate run by the College of San Mateo (a community college) -- on their second digital channel. It broadcasts many English-language news programs from around the world. You might want to check out if it's available in your area. I don't watch it too often myself, but it's pretty interesting. And in-season they carry Australian Rules Football ... :-)

Now your getting a whole different kind of brain washing over here j/k. But yeah propaganda and lies are spread through news and what not during any war on either side. Its actually what their not telling us that we don't see in comparison to some things they may be told.

I've watched some of the riot videos and have noticed that Egyptians throw like girls.

It makes me wonder, why do they throw like girls? Aren't there any sports in Egypt that involve throwing a small, riot-sized projectile? Do they get the bad habit from Cricket?

I just get the feeling they'd get their butts royally kicked in a game of baseball, a snowball fight, or even dodge ball. It would be like playing against a bunch of girls!

It makes me feel sorry for them, like I should hop on a plane to Egypt and offer some classes in how to throw a rock so they don't continue to embarrass themselves in front of the world, sheesh.

No! Hakeem. The power comes from your shoulder, not your elbow! The glorious revolution will never survive if you continue to throw with your elbow!

This video is bizarre. Protesters kneel and pray while getting blasted by water cannon.

They don't throw like girls. Try throwing a rock while facing someone who's about to shoot you with steel coated rubber bullets (or worse real bullets) before you can complete your throw.

I was curious enough to look for some stats of baseball style throwing speed versus cricket throwing style speed, and in the pros they are basically the same. Both records were around 100mph. Who knew?

But is that limited to the pros of the respective sports? I just can't get past the physics of it. The straight-arm is a rule of cricket, so I assume if it weren't a rule, they would use a baseball style throw, which isn't held back by rules. Then you could keep your body more compact to avoid the bullets, that straight arm style leaves them wide open and flailing.
