This doesn't really apply to me as I live in South Africa but for all you folks in USA check this out:
//www.spokeo.com/

If you know someone's name you can pretty much find out anything about them. That got me wondering how safe it is seeing as you can get addresses, income etc...
I tried some of our USA members' names and I could find most of you. Some of you are off the radar though...

Yeah I saw this site the other night. I think this is too much info to give out so freely. I know its all public record stuff, but damn. There's not much about me, actually there's more info about my house than really about me. But some of my friends have their phone numbers posted on there. One female friend found out about this site because of a guy she never liked way back in high school who had a crush on her called one night, saying he found her number on there. She went and got her number changed.

That's pretty funny actually.

About 25% of the stuff on there about me is correct. The rest is wrong.

If anyone cares, you can be removed from their data base if you ask - it's pretty easy.

1. find you
2. copy the url at the top of your page
3. click "Privacy" at the bottom of the page and then fill in the empty boxes at the bottom of the page it opens - THE FREE STUFF

They will send you an email that you have to click a link in to confirm. Then when you search for yourself, you are no longer listed.

NOTE: If your spouse is listed, they have to ask to be removed (you can do it) or their information remains. And the photos they use are old, lol! Our yard looks better than that and we've sold the car long ago! :P

It says my hobbies are "travel & cooking". I'll give them the travel part, but as far as the cooking goes, ask my wife if that's true.

Otherwise, everything else is pretty close to dead on.

I looked up my mom. They have her info right, but they show my dad living with her and that he is in his late 30s. That's not even close to right. He died in 1979 and would be turning 94 this year if he were still alive.

I guess I'm off the grid? I'm not in there.

I received 3 or 4 emails from friends about this so I checked it out on www.snopes.com - search on spokeo - you might want to check snopes out first.

This is what's called an "aggregator" site. It's not the first one and it won't be the last. What they do is compile publicly-available information from different sources and display it to their customers. Opting out via their privacy policy does NOT remove the source information from the other sites from which it was harvested. So it's pretty pointless.

as someone pointed out, all of the info they have is public record.

My address and phone number are available from the phone company (or people.yahoo.com). All anyone needs to find a satellite view of my house is my address (maps.google.com). Who I am married to is public record. The size of my house, how long I've been there and what I paid for it are available from the state department of taxation & assessments. The current value is based upon the current assessment and the value of other homes recently sold in the area (www.zillow.com), also public record.

No need to freak out people. There is nothing there that anyone really interested in finding couldn't find otherwise. It's just all in one place to save them about three minutes of searching.

Exactly. This much information is available on other aggregators, such as pipl.com. All that extra stuff about family members is just a cheap trick, something like a horoscope - half the people will find a connection :).

Apparently I have a child that I don't know about!

Yep! And in the computer industry, there's an old adage: "Garbage in, garbage out" or GIGO for short. And the information on this site is a perfect example.

haha! My hobbies are reading and sports. Reading is correct. Sports is incredibly funny! :D

The household income is incredibly wrong or is that house price?

I'll trade you your 'sports' for my 'cooking'

My hobby is not existing! There is no record of me, and for my parents, it says they only have 1 child instead of 2. I wonder how I can best use this new found super power.
