Is this a good deal guys?

Too good to be true, I am afraid.

Proceed with caution - are you picking it up from the seller's house, or somewhere else? Ask to see the original receipts - if it is legit, s/he will at least have some of them still.

Yeh I'm picking it up from their house and it was originally on the market for £500 and has been there for a couple of months.
We have spoke on the phone and I am picking it up tomorrow.

Is there anyway to tell if it is a fake when I am looking at it? he said I can look at it and test it out when we get there.

I'd be far more concerned that it was nicked rather than fake - and you definitely don't ant to be done for handling stolen goods!

I don't, but to be fair I can't do anything about that and I'm not going to refuse a good deal. When I'm there inspecting what should I look out for, condition wise etc?

Picking it up from the seller's house would make it being stolen goods less likely - he would be more likely to say he would bring it to you. Questions to ask - approx how many shutter actuations(remember a DSLR shutter only has a finite life and is VERY expensive to replace). The deal looks good for the rest of the package alone though - the Tammy is less than £100 new, and I think the Sigma about the same, but the Nikkor lens is over £500.

Thanks for the tips, is there any way to find out what the shutter count is in case he is lying?

P.s I offered him 325 for just the D80 and Nikkor lens but he said 340 for the whole lot so it sounded like he just wanted to get rid.

If you do a google search on shutter actuation count there are a few websites with suggestions of software that'll help you find it out quickly. To be honest though even if the camera is on it's last legs shutter-wise you're still not getting a bad deal considering how awesome the 18-200 is, let alone the other bits.

If you're taking cash along with you tomorrow I'd be a bit cautious and maybe take someone along with you.

I sort of agree with SaraR on the stolen/not stolen front. It seems like a really good deal until the police take it away from you with no refund. Posting about the great deal on internet forums probably won't help the transaction go completely unnoticed either (although admittedly it would take a very enthusiastic copper to trawl through 'togs forums for clues Scoobydoo style!).

What part of the UK are you picking it up from?

I know this thread must be getting annoying but when I get to the SLR is there anything apart from the shutter count I need to check? Lens mount or anything like that?

I really appreciate the help everyones given me :-)

In Leicester. My mum's coming with me and I'm going into check everything out fire off some shots with all the lenses etc.

Well it will be difficult to get a solid actuation number until you get it home, unless he's willing to fire off a shot quickly in front of you and load it into a bit of software. Whilst you're actually there though check the lenses front and back for scratches, and that they lock in place properly. Have a look at the sensor for scratches - a bit of dust is cleanable, scratches are an issue!. Check that the autofocus is working on each of the lenses too, fire off a couple of test shots at different focal lengths just to be sure.

If you're at his house and it's his camera I'm sure he wouldn't mind showing you a couple of shots he took with it too - this might help put your mind at ease about whether or not it's really his to sell.

Good idea going with your mum, just be prepared to walk away if you think something's a bit suspect!

Anything come of this? Did it all go down well?
01/05/2011 02:50:38 PM · #16
If the seller claims that it was his/hers, ask for some tips about using the settings and menus. If they don't have a clue, it's not likely that they owned it or similar equipment.
Be sure to hold the lenses where you can peer through them into a bright light, to see if there are any boogers growing inside them. If there are, that may get the seller to lower the price a little more. Look for serial numbers being intact, and for an ID etched into any or all of the parts.
Wishing you best of luck with this.

Thanks for the help guys, it went really really well!!
Everything is in great condition and has got all the original boxes that came with it.
I tested pretty much everything you guys suggested - took a few shots with each lens and previewed them on my laptop and everything turned out great.
The guy said he like to do climbing but it was too heavy for his needs and that's why he was selling it.

In the end for £340 I got:

Nikon D80
Nikon 18-200mm VR I
Tamron 50-200
Sigma 18-50

32gb Card
Hoya Polarising filter for 18-200mm
Wireless Nikon remote
Manual and 3rd party manual and papers
Chargers, batteries etc
Lens hoods for all lenses.

I'm absoloutley chuffed :-D

ETA: I'll post up a few pics in a bit.

Happy for you! I hope you enjoy it all for a long time, and maybe even get a ribbon or two.
If you moved up from a P&S cam, you now have a whole lot of new settings and buttons to use to mess up an otherwise great scene that a P&S could get perfectly well without even thinking about settings. D80 is a great camera. I was thinking about getting a D80 before the D7000 came out, but the 7k meters with my older Nik Ai lenses, so that made the choice to go with the 7k easy for me.

I mean I know how to use aperture, shutter speed and ISO just need to get familiar with the other buttons :-)

You did get a good deal there. The 18-200 is such a useful lens (I seem to use it more than any other) and costs in the £500 region, so a good deal in and of itself. Now sell the Tamron and Sigma, as they are redundant since they cover the same focal lengths as the Nikon lens, then it'll be an even better deal!

Indeed. Sell those two and get a 50mm 1.8. You did get a fantastic deal there.

I a hoping to get a 50mm sometime but I think I'm gonna keep the two lenses because my Bro has the d60 and I'm gonna let him borrow the 55-200 whenever and god forbid if I broke the 18-200 at least I've got a backup.

I didn't even know until I got home that he had also thrown in the Polarising filter worth 40 quid!
