i sold my 50 mm f 1.8 D many years back. I miss this prime and planning to get it back but looking into 1.4 instead.
Anyone own Nikon 50 mm f 1.4 G SIC SW and Nikon 50 mm f 1.4 D? Please comment and help me to decide. I google too much information and sample photos and i still can't decide. I hope some one here can help me out. Referring to //nikon-50-mm-lens.blogspot.com/2010/10/nikon-50mm-f-14-g-f-14-d-and-f-18-d.html, they are physically almost the same. I am more concern into QUALITY. Thank you in advance. |

Hallo
I have the 50mm 1.4D. I love the qualify of the lens. I cannot compare it to the G lens as I nener used one. I could not justify the difference of cost and i am still very happy with my purchase. Please tell me how I can assist?
Kind regards |

the G version comes with Silent Wave motor. I remember very well my previous 1.8D is very noisy during focusing. is 1.4D making any noise during focusing? |

The G has a 9-blade diaphragm, versus the D's 7-blader (read: smoother bokeh), and 8 lens elements in 6 groups groups instead of 6 elements in 5 groups (read: a more sophisticated design with, probably, better control of chromatic aberration), plus it has the silent wave motor (read: quieter, more precise, more rapid focusing).
That's how I'd read the specs anyway, but I'm not a Nikon guy (anymore) so I have no firsthand experience.

The D series focuses using the focusing motor inside the camera body, through a rod that goes to gears in the lens. It's not a noisy arrangement but if you are wanting the quietest possible, you would want the S series, with the silent wave motor in the lens.
The D series lenses have an aperture ring, and the G series do not, so if you want to use it with a reversing ring, you have no aperture control with the G. When you take the G off the camera, it goes to minimum aperture unless you wedge the aperture control lever with something to hold it open.
The G has more advantages than disadvantages. The D will work on a full frame sensor, and the lenses that have DX in the description are only for crop sensor.

thank you very much everyone.
G series is out for now. D300 has screw driver.
I will save some money for this round.
Previously I got rid of the 1.8D is because i hardly use it.
So i assume, the 'hardly use it' incident will happen again.
Next I am gonna search photo quality produce by 1.4D vs 1.8D.
Any of you found something, please post links here too.
Thank you. |

Hi
I have a D700 body. I know it uses the motor in body but is is fast and makes no noise. Love the lens but becaye os full frame body I should have bought a 85mm lens. I think I would get more use out of it as portrait lens. I currently use the 105mm macro f2.8 lens as portrait lens.
