It has occurred to me every time I vote in a FS that it is a Sisyphean task because it's comparing apples to oranges. Assuming the entries are everyone's best, how can you fairly compare a street scene to a landscape? A macro to an abstract? A glamor shot to photojournalism? Perhaps we can rotate a limitless FS (as we do now) with a generalized "themed" FS (ie. "nature", "abstract", "indoors", etc.), every other month. It would certainly help voters judge the merits of the photograph itself rather than influence the preference for one type of photography over another. Or am I just trying to make my voting job easier :-).

Yes. :-)

Even in categoried competitions, they usually have to give out awards for "Best In Show" anyway, and the FS just bypasses the preliminary round.

However, you could start a thread where each month you post your own choice for best in each category from that month's FS entries, and invite others to do the same. That way maybe you could have the feedback/discussion you want without having to affect/change the system overall.

I like this idea. It will also encourage everyone to take a second look at their favorites.

I like the General's idea - we need more threads about different types of shots in the FS, it increases all of our chances of having photos from the middle of the pack recognised! :o)

Ah ... my plan is taking root ... ;-)

There are all kinds of ways of looking at/sorting photos.

For example, when you view the challenge results, you can order them by your own vote given. It might be interesting to post the photo you consider the "best" of those to which you gave a vote of four, of five, and of six, and then discuss what it was (for you) which kept the "poor" photo from being slightly below average, the below average photo from being a bit above, and the above average photo from being outstanding.

Post the image you think was the "worst" submission (you don't have to say what number vote you gave it) and comment on why you rated it that low, and/or what might have made it at least an "average" picture.

Post an image picked at random from the results and comment on it.

ETC.......

How about a few general categories in the FS? So, you're selecting to enter or vote on the FS, but under a very broad heading like "landscape", "portrait", "macro" or "un-categorized". Give out the three ribbons on a cross-section of these, but maybe give out HMs to the highest 2 images in each sub-category.

Nah, that sounds like too much work...
