The NC Mtn State Fair is coming up and I need some help deciding what to enter. :)

The criteria for judging is--

Impact (effect on viewer, catches the eye and holds attention, mood and story telling qualities)=35,
Composition (arrangement, completeness and balance of picture elements)=35,
Technical Quality (sharpness, clarity, etc.)=20,
Workmanship (prepared and mounted neatly and securely to meet requirement)=10,
Total=100

The categories are (each category is divided into bw and color)

Agriculture Related
Plants & Flowers
Animals
Landscape - Scenic
People & Portraits
Sports
2008 Photograph of the NC Mountain State Fair
Story Telling Sequence (4)
*must be 11x30 with 4 5x7s mounted on it
Artistically or digitally enhanced print (Fundamentally changing elements of composition (additions and/or deletions to photo)

I can enter up to 5, with no more than 2 in any one category

So far, my sorta favorites

a for bw sports (minus the selective desat -- straight bw)

b for color sports

maybes --
c d e f

g h i j

k l m n

(a bit of karma trivia -- when i first started entering the fair 5 or so years ago, i had NO people shots. now, that is usually what i end up choosing from.)

Photos a, g,m and n are definite winners in my book and I must say that image g absolutely captivated me.

The very best of luck to you.

Thanks for the comments about "g"

That is one I got A LOT of positive facebook feedback on when I first posted it last winter. I just figured it had that emotional appeal because most of the commenters knew the couple and/or were related to them.

To be honest, the appeal for me was simply the fact that they reminded me of my own parents, who looked nothing like these two fine people... it's the degree of caring that seems to permeate the image, something that was readily evident whenever my parents were together.

This image in my opinion will resonate well with all people.

Definitely, hands down, no questions asked --- g! If you don't enter it, I might have to kick you. :D

The rest:

b, c, d, & m

My favorites are a, g, and m. In the football one, I'm immediately drawn to the player's eye and think he's waiting for the coach to call the next play. I can feel his sense of anticipation. The other two, well, I'm just a sap for a love story. :)

I like a quite a bit, but I'm not sure about the selective desat -- it seems like you're hitting them over the head.

I took this to mean that selective desat wouldn't be used.

G, K, F, in that order for me.
When I saw the thread title, I thought that someone was proposing a "Fly" challenge LOL.

right. it will be a straight bw -- the eye won't be blue/green like it is now.

b, g, m - I like b better than a - can't beat the colors. Good luck!

Karma, my opinion is definitely A & B.

I love G & M and if you can pair them up together like so:

Then both together tell the tale of a long and endearing marriage. Photo M is a new couple facing new horizons as they ride off into the sunset together. Photo G is a couple who have faced many, many years together and together they will face the 'golden years'. Another little bene I see in pairing them up is that in both compositions the couples are leaning towards each other.

G really stood out to me as well. Really great shot.

I'd de-sat the eye on "a". The Selective de-sat just doesn't work for me. Try doing some dodge/burn on it to really bring out the impact of the eye. Though his green eye is just eerie.

ETA: a, b, m and d are my favorites. I'd rather "m" didn't have the noise, but w/e.

I think A, G, and M would do well with a State Fair audience/judges; with the judging criteria.
However, for a Star Wars fan, I think E is a pretty fun (and done very well) photo.

how does this work for y'all as a bw?

Whatever else you decide on, don't leave out g.

B is great for color sports!
My other faves are F and G. F has great visual impact (terrific thumbnail), but there's something about the processing... is it possibly oversharpened? It makes the sidewalk a bit hard to look at and makes her skin look rough.
G is sentimental, but I think very well done.

One guy's opinions! :-)

This thread is the perfect example as to why when we post an image in voting we are sure is going to get a 6+ it ends up as a 4.2 and visa versa LOL

haha. no kidding.

I like it either way, but prefer the color version.
