Canon 60D

Interesting... it says it can capture in 1:1, 16:9, and 4:3 in addition to 3:2. How does that work? Seems like you're either (a) arbitrarily cropping image area or (b) dynamically changing the shape of the sensor, where (a) is silly and (b) is awesome but implausible. Is there a (c)?

Hmmm. Not sure how pleased I'd be if I were a Canon user. Sorta creates an annoying series of steps from the rebel line on up. I'm still astonished how fast Canon pumps out new bodies, especially in the XXd series.

I would assume A. they do it so the aspect ratio fits your intended output.

It just has different parts of the sensor active. I'm sure it's just like how my LX3 works. It's actually a super awesome feature that I really enjoy. Very easy to switch from a 16:9 for landscape to 4:3 for something more like a portrait, for instance. At first I thought it was a dumb feature on the lx3, but I quickly grew to enjoy it.

Of note is the switch to SD memory. A first, I believe, for a Canon dSLR.

There are Canon dSLRs which use both SD and compact Flash if I recall correctly.

I stand corrected. The XSi uses SD cards. I've lost touch with the entry level... :)

What about the cameras which have both cards? 1D and 1Ds

Ahh, a sigh of relief from me...

I was quite worried that I would regret the 50D in some way after this announcement..

In the end, I'm quite pleased with my 50D, that camera is more like a rebel than anything, basically it's just a really nice freaking rebel.

Correct me if I'm wrong of course. :)

That's how it sounds to me... We had been worried that the 7D was going to look less attractive. but not so.

UK price I have seen so far is £1,099 body only - for another £75>£100 you can get a 7D ! Whilst there might be a niche for this I just cant see people buying this over a 7D, or will they?

Even the hands on preview calls it a 'Super Rebel'.

No joystick, no port for flash sync cable. Just a couple of things mentioned that makes it more of a Rebel upgrade.

The 60d seems, on paper, to be a great camera. it has a much better meter, good AF sensor, great battery, better handling, and a very competitive price point. the 7d was the evolution of the X0d series of camera. This is a new class of camera for Canon. It is not a rebel. The rebels are great cameras.. This is better. What is wrong with that?

Nothing at all. I was simply worried that I would need to drop the $$ to upgrade soon after this announcement, however, I actually still feel the 50D is a better fit for my needs that the 60D.

If you are currently the owner of a Rebel series camera (or any P&S, or even older XXD), I'm certain this would be a great choice, but if you currently own a 50D or 7D, then this offering is much less attractive than anticipated..

That's all.. Nothing is wrong with it... :)

Even if the 60D were a direct upgrade to the existing lineage, why would you need to upgrade, as long as you are happy with the 50D? Myself, I have not pushed anywhere near the limits of mine yet and any upgrades I do will be in lenses or other gear.

This is a rather unexpected marketing move, I must say... apparently they are seeing the division between market segments a little differently than in the past. It might seem surprising that they would move the XXD series to SD memory, but that is probably driven by the smaller body size and cost. Not only are CF cards themselves physically larger, but the connectors involved are large and expensive.

Better more accurate AF would have been one reason that could have grabbed me, as well as a sensor with improved dynamic range, or improved high ISO performance..

Then again, all of these are reasons that I've been eying the xD series cameras...

Def is not gunna push the 50D out of the market. it seems to be reaching toward a slightly different audience. nothing i am overly impressed with. then again ive been suffering from full frame envy for a short while now so its hard to look at this super rebel with envy.

And the nice thing is that the 50D price will drop :)

Nice for who? ;)

ETA: This is absolutely a joke, there's no way I'm dropping my 50D, no matter what other bodies I get, it's a great body.

Pretty dull upgrade i think. At least the 50d price will drop.
08/26/2010 04:48:06 PM · #23
Reading the preview material, I think this is more an upgrade for Rebels than the 50D. The addition of the flip screen will appeal to those who use Liveview, but I would be feeling disappointed if I had been awaiting this new model:(

Because it's targeted at the worst of all things... "average consumers"...
