The total lunar eclipse of December 21 2010 will be visible over eastern Asia, Australasia, northwestern Europe and Africa, and the Americas. The Moon will be well within the Earth's umbral shadow, in a total eclipse that will last over an hour. Dec. 21 is also the Winter Solstice. How about a Challenge to somehow capture the spirit of both events in one composition, with Expert Editing allowed?

Let's do this thing!

Yeah, this year we had a Full Moon (the "Harvest Moon") right on the Autumnal Equinox (some pictures here), and now we get a Total Lunar Eclipse (NASA article) which falls on the Winter Solstice! Much more info in the article ...
Originally posted by cited article:

Coincidences: This lunar eclipse falls on the date of the northern winter solstice. How rare is that? Total lunar eclipses in northern winter are fairly common. There have been three of them in the past ten years alone. A lunar eclipse smack-dab on the date of the solstice, however, is unusual. Using NASA's 5000 year catalog of lunar eclipses and JPL's HORIZONS ephemeris to match eclipses and solstices, author Dr. Tony Phillips had to go back to the year 1378 to find a similar "winter solstice lunar eclipse."

If you look at the map in the article you'll see that the total eclipse can be seen across all of North America ... best viewing times are listed as well.

I see no need for Expert Editing myself -- Advanced should be plenty ... I don't want to see any spaceships ... maybe I'm just too "inside the box" this time ... :-(

Really, I'm not even sure it's that great a challenge topic, as it would be almost purely a technical/equipment challenge. I just wanted to post the info/article on the eclipse, and used the existing thread with the right title.

I don't know that I agree with that. Sure, those with super longer zooms can likely get cool detailed shots of the moon, but that can get boring fast. Instead, if you put the moon into context, like John did with his series over Madison, that's where the really cool and creative shots will come into play.

I like this idea!

Oh yeah ... I guess making up poster-like compositions like this would be a good reason to use the Expert editing set ...

Exactly my thoughts... Perhaps just a nice exception about composite images, without the rest of the useless expert crap.

Ah, heck, looks like we will be clouded out for this... well, there's enough time yet that there's hope the forecast is wrong!
12/17/2010 07:15:56 PM · #14
If it's cloudy, can I just insert a shot from a few eclipses ago? It will look the same...

Probably something everybody needs to do once, but only once... :)

Lunar Eclipse information

Go take a look. Was interesting.

I took this shot in 2008 during the last Lunar Eclipse. The timing for this eclipse won't be very compatible with my work schedule. Oh well.

For me either. The best viewing time is going to be 2:40 in the morning.

Not sure if I'm going to do anything for this.

This wouldn't be allowed under the current advanced editing rules would it?
IT isnt any different to stacking shots for star trails.
Just wondering...

As long as it is one file it would be ok. What you do during that one exposure is up to you :D

Looking forward to watching it at around 11.30 pm PST. So far, the moon is visible in WA now. I hope the clouds don't thicken in the meantime.
12/20/2010 11:38:02 PM · #22
We have a rain storm here. No moon visible. Sad.

Think I'll pop up to the 10,000 peak that's close to me for this one, low clouds, but they should be absent up that high...

Good luck there. It was nice up until now, when Mother Nature decided to cover it with clouds, leaving a dull white spot!!! Bah!

Cloudy in Birmingham, AL. Doh!
