What an amazing design! So many memorials are heavy, dark, somber, chunky a nd blocky. This is a soaring statement of pride in those who fought for freedom in desperate times. For me it captures the energy and grace of those brave young men and their flying machines. What a great celebration of those pilots and their deeds. I can't imagine what could top this.

Sorry about the lack of appearance in the Telegraph! Not my fault - it's what I was told. However, I've found some reference to the rivals so see what you think!...

Ha, I bought the Telegraph today! I found the rivals on the Southampton Echo web page - in the comments section, people seemed to be going or either yours or No1.

Some cool entries, but Jon's is still my favorite. No. 1 is also good, but I don't think it would be as impactful as a monument.

I still think your is the better option... although I like the second one with the spiral effect also (and I am guessing it would be easier to construct) but it does not have the same impact to me. Good luck....

Yours and #1 are the only two that should even be there. And yours is better, if more involved.. (read costly.)

I just saw this thread and WOW - what a stunning design! Here's the latest info on the competition from the Telegraph. It appears the results will be announced in Nov.

Sorry not to check back in earlier with an update. I think I should be hearing back on the 2nd November.

Mike_311 - I hope it can be built!! I've spoken to structural engineers who have said that it is feasible (with a few adjustments as expected). Below are a few more detail views and allowances for some minor structural changes.

Thanks for the comments - and the link to the Telegraph article CJinCA, which incidentally adopted a fair amount of 'creative license' when it comes to what was said on the phone to Mr Jamieson. In fact I was quite disgusted when I saw it since it painted a kind of X-factor style sympathy-vote scenario. He asked how I had come about the information and I explained that my Dad had passed on a newspaper cutting. Unfortunately, after having explained my creative angle on the design in response to his questions, I also let slip that my Dad was terminally ill so it had become a quest of mine to get as far as I could for his sake. I should have known better as I said no such words (not even my style) and he seemed keen to create an angle on this rather than the creative!

Anyway, it's nerve-jangling so I'll get back to you in due course...

Awesome. Hopefully it does get built. DPC could use some more ribbon worthy subjects to photograph. :P

I'm hoping yours wins, too, and if I ever go to England again, I'll make sure I get down to Southampton to see it.
I like the red and blue strips on the wing trails in the night scene - are they LED lights? Very cool idea.

Yeah, how about that? You gonna promise a personal tour to all of us who've been following this with great interest, should it get selected and built?

Of course, you do realize that means you will be giving tours, as I can't possibly see how this design could NOT be selected, as it simply puts the competition to shame IMO.

You lot are lovely!! A personal tour? I couldn't think of a better way to give up some time. I guarantee that it would happen – and it would be one of the biggest pleasures. As for it appearing in a challenge - well that would be icing on the cake!

Gratitude abound to all and I really hope I can impart some positive news come the 2nd. I'd just like to have the chance to talk to professionals about how it could be achieved...

Seriously though, I was sorry to read about your dad and hope he is doing as well as he can under the circumstances.

We're all waiting for the announcement - hope it's the one saying you are the WINNER!

This is an awesome and incredible work !
I'd like to know if you though about sismic and weather resistance because it look like a bit fragile at glance. I'd like so much to see that constructed ;)

Thanks keyz - yes, I did give thought to that and the potential for high winds (it would need to be strong in a coastal area). The key will be to construct the main cantilever beam, flight trails and Spitfire in such a way as to give way to strong gusts aerodynamically, guiding wind around and releasing pressure. These factors are for engineers to advise on ultimately. Basically, I've been told that anything is possible, just with adjustments if necessary. I imagine there's a limit to what we can allow for though (hurricane, tornado, etc.). Mind you, if anyone has any ideas then feel free to post them as they might be noticed at the next stage if there is one!!

I imagine if you bury the cantilever deep enough you will be ok for dead load, but i imagine, as stated, that wind on the plane, and thus the cantilever will be brutal, considering that the aerodynamics of a plane aren't ideal in the position you put it in.

i would love to see this get built and i would love to see an in depth engineering report on how its accomplished. keep us updated!

Still tracking this thread and the question of high winds etc cropped up.

I am sure the engineer responsible will take all this into account when siting the monument. Prevailing winds in UK tend to be Southwesterly, these bring in rain, high winds and once in a while a hurricane as in 1987. Siting would ensure that the aircraft is not facing SW with the underparts flat onto the winds. Built side on would decreased resistance and increase airflow over the monument. Another one for the engineers to decide on:))
