So what turns your crank when you think of your perfect summertime meal...a cold beer in a mug dripping with condensation paired with a fresh-off-the bbq bratwurst, with coleslaw on the side? Lamb chops with a rough red wine and grilled asparagus? Grilled fish with a cold salad and an elegant glass of white and a side of salad? Grilled veggies with seasoned couscous and whatever you'd chase that with?

C'mon, it's summertime (except in the Southern Hemisphere and surely even now they can still sling a shrimp on the barbis) and the grillin' is easy! Let's do it!

I love what I call my "Mega Salad" - it isn't just a side dish, it's a whole meal with attitude!

Salad stuff (such as lettuce, tomato, peppers, cucumber, etc)
Avocado
Boiled, chopped eggs
Cooked meat (such as chicken or thinly sliced steak strips)
Cheese (the type varies according to mood and availability)
Croutons or a few bits of pasta
Other stuff I discover in the fridge/pantry that look inviting

A choice of salad dressings (never put on the whole salad).

If you'd like references, check with RayEthier - I think he'd sell his grandmother for a bowl of my Mega Salad :-)

ETA:
OOoooohhhhhhh, and I made a non-cook cheesecake just yesterday for the first time....... it is amazing!!!!
It is super light and fluffy (in fact, I ended up calling it a Lemon Cheese Cake Cloud). It is very refreshing, quite sour and lemony, although of course that could be tamed down if you're a real "sweetie".
Made with low fat and low sugar everything, it is actually relatively "healthy", certainly compared to your standard cheese cakes.
If you'd like the recipe, let me know and I'll either send it to you or upload it somewhere.

MMMMMMMMM....show me! Make one and take a pic! And then Ray can print out a copy and post it in his den! ;-)

ETA: I once had a recipe for a rather bizarre cake that you made in the fridge. A key ingredient was white vinegar, of all things. Anyway at one stage I was making it often and have since lost track of that recipe. It was actually very good.

*BUMP*

Yesterday afternoon I set up in the shadiest, breeziest part of my lawn and had a blast shooting some really yummy food, having fun with figuring out how to get everything just right so I could shoot and capture the rich colours and textures and droplets of condensation beading and running down the glassware...ohhh yumm.

So c'mon, Langdon! It's summer! Gorgeous light during the long evenings (when it has cooled down even during this heat wave...111 up here yesteday) lots of socializing...bbqs, potlucks, tailgaters, weddings, parties of every stripe.

nnnnnrrrr! Time's up! Clearly all of dpc is populated by people who don't eat and don't enjoy the wonderful bounty provided to us in summertime. I had to scarf down not one, but two- TWO! - whole handfuls of fresh, wild-growing raspberries in my back 1/2 acre for consolance.

I could certainly go for this challenge. I have yet to really successfully shoot food, so it would be a good chance to practice :)

Check the LCBO's Food and Drink magazine online...sorry you'll have to Google as my linky skills are a little weak. Usually you use white plates to accentuate the food, minimal props, lots of shallow DOF normally though the latest issue made a liar out of me - they used 4 photogs instead of the usual 2. The LCBO (aka the Liquor Control Board of Ontario) carries wine/spirits/some beer. The Beer Store however, well, that carries beer. And Chill magazine, which is also good for food porn.

That's good :-) I'm a lover of honkin' thick, grilled pork steaks myself.

ANY food challenge will suit me, even if I do need to make a summer salad when it's near freezing outside :)
I LOVE food photography, but I don't do well with it in non-food challenges.

Thanks for that information! Super helpful. I will have to try it out with the new PVC pipe/bed sheet light tent I just finished making :)

Hey, giantmike, may want to scare up the recent thread on homemade equipment started by Magnumphotography...and a few years back magenmarie also had a similar thread going.

Ahh, trifling details :-) So go ahead and show us what you eat during snowless winters!

And it's the land of pepetual rain here. Not sure how many folk would understand a typical summertime meal. It consists of a BBQ that was transferred inside to a regular dinner cause of weather conditions.

Well, that counts. And it doesn't HAVE to be BBQ....mine isn't going to be, but will feature foods that are popular during the summer months. So in my case, it will not be a cast-iron stewpot full of beef stew, because that's winter food to me. But maybe for others, summertime does mean beef stew. It's up to you!

Just wish it had been Advanced editing but ah well can't complain :-)
