This is embarrassing.

Ridiculous. I remember when we first installed fibre in our office. They had to pull it in from the street, and we were the only customer in a building with twenty-six floors to have it. We were on the eighth floor. We were charged only $1,000 for the install. This was fibre, mind you. Yes, we were in a downtown location, but to be quoted that much for a residential broadband hookup in 2010 is at once laughable and sad.

actually for that sort of money she could buy a newer house in a less remote area and have better facilities all round . . health, school, shops . . and broadband.

"I phoned BT and said surely this is a typing error and the girl said 'No, there's been no mistake, other people have had bills for much more than this.'"

This is the quote that I thought was really strange--did the other people actually pay?

from my past experience with BT, if they were the last telephone company on Earth I would not have a phone.

If they were the last telephone company on earth, you would never get through anyway. Having a phone would just lay you open to people getting a wrong number/being misconnected and asking you for pizza and curry...

i do not think so. If anyone ever paid this much, it would be in the news, just like this one is.

This sort of quote is not uncommon and does amuse me - the vast bulk of telephony traffic in the uk uses some, most, or all of the BT network - and people explain how their line has been so much better since they changed the name of the Telco on the bill and how they would never go back to BT.

It's a bit like when you change your Gas or Water company - no one actually comes round and fits new pipes into your house.

Best thing this lady can do is get a mobile dongle (assuming their is mobile coverage in her particular Welsh valley) and surf for a fraction of the cost.

i know that i have a re-badged BT line now.
the actual line was never the issue, it was the attitude of the customer service department, which the report highlighted in this thread clearly demonstrates.
