I think HDR is possible with a single raw image by making 3 copies with different exposure level. Then add them together and so on....

Yes it is possible from a single raw, but you will get noise in your result. Specialy if you have very dark and light areas.

Hi all,

Can someone please let me know about this HDR effects. I really liked HDR gallery. But couldn't make any photos. How does it works?

If any help, I have a mini-tutorial about HDR (photomatix):

This tutorial really good. Easy to understand the result from 3 multi exposed images. I am trying out trial version of photomatrix. Is there any other way doing it in CS3 ?

well..let's see some action. ;-)

Not a formal tutorial, but I did post this a while back. I plan on submitting it as a tutorial but just haven't had the time to put it together

I hope this helps.

Is anyone aware of an HDR process within Lightroom (a godsend by adobe)?

It's the other way around, you can tone map a single image, but you need multiple exposures for HDR.

Okay.....then why is the tool I use in CS2 called an HDR conversion tool?

I notice that the block with the curve-like tool works like a tone curve tool, but its range is so much more and it's infinitely more adjustable and broad in its effects.

Is that really tone mapping?

Or is it emulation?

I'm soooooooooooooooo confused!!!.......8>)

The CS2 version of HRD and tone mapping is lacking to say the least. Do yourself a favor, download the trail version of PhotoMatix.

//www.hdrsoft.com/

Import a RAW file you want to tone map (or a JPG, but RAW files are better) and play around with it. It's a much better tool for tone mapping and HDR, well worth the $99 for the full version if you decide this is something you want to do.

I stepped through the process for this image. Look in the comments section.

Do you have to use multiple exposures?

I thought it was in the processing.

This tutorial talks about tone-mapping emulation using the HDR converter.

Tone Mapping Emulation Tutorial Using the HDR Converter

I am under the impression you cannot tone-map with a single image, but you can use HDR.

I used Les's techniques to get these results and judt loved the tutorial for what it opened up for me in the way of a new kind of PP work.

The barn may not seem as heavy-handed, but it was very underexposed and gloomy looking on an overcast day here in the winter. There was no blue skies, green grass, and rich tones in the stone and wood originally.

These were both single exposures......no overlays.

I'm glad others answered his question.

Whenever I see an average vote cast of 3.4 or thereabouts, I figure that person must be sure that they are very very good, and we are pretty hopeless, so I don't dare offer my very inadequate help or advice.

HDR is when you take multible images and layer them on top of each other, each exposed different. for example, lets say you three exposures, the first being under-exposed, the second is exposed properly, and the third is overexposed, when you layer them you will have detail in the highlights (thank you underexposure) and detail in the shadows (thank you overexposed)...theres tutorials about right up there ^ under the 'learn' menu.

An HDR is composed of two or more separate exposures, taken at different exposure levels to capture the dynamic range that the eye can see but the camera cannot. the images are then merged with software that is capable of doing it. There are many packages that can merge images.

You can also do a simulated HDR, by processing a RAW file in different ways and then merging them. I've also been able to get a similar surrealistic look by using som alternative processing techniques.

Best way is to go to the Forums section, and on top is a box.

Type in HDR and when the results come up, you can refine the search by selecting the term in the subject line only to help refine it. So much info to be found there.
