Don't know if this was directed at me, but I'm not "anti-filter" at all. I just think that as "photographers", we should explore ways in which a photograph looks "painterly", beyond just filters. |
it was a general response .... been seeing a lot of comments on challenge photos which deride "filters", too.
i totally agree with you, and i do try different lighting, etc. on most of my submissions...but sometimes to get the look i want requires a filter to act like a "brush" to "paint" with the existing pixels

Some helpful plugins... Try out for 10 days
I bought the Akvis Oilpaint plugin last year and haven't had a chance to use it till now...

That's it! Embrace your inner Picasso, Leonardo, Turner, Vermeer, Rothko, Miro, Giotto....USE filters making something "painterly" A SCENE (not only a landscape) and NOT imitating and debasing the impressionists and make a landscape - a dime a dozen. |

The description says nothing about not using filters or textures. Do as you wish and make an image you love. :-) |

I don't think the use of filters is absolutely necessary ... this is one of my favorite pictures, and I think it has a "painterly" feel to it, caused by a bit of blur (it's taken from a moving train) and the coloring which is exclusively Curves through masks.

I'd like to challenge people to use lighting to achieve the look :) Window light, overhead light, flash, strobes, reflectors....

To be clear ...
Are we to make the photograph appear like a painting in post processing like an Oil Colour or Water Colour effect
or
We take a picture that has a painterly look as a photograph without the need for excessive process..
or
