If the idea is to rename the files, IrfanView has an excellent batch-processing function. You can rename, change format, resize, or almost any combination of various effects. You can select images from multiple folders and batch-process them into one location. Windows only though ...

ETA: I find it pretty intuitive to use, but if you try it and have questions let me know (or post them here).

My friend isn't into photography, but she needs to sort and rename some vacation photos.

I know there is a free bulk rename utility, but I don't think it lets you sort the photos (e.g. drag and drop into position before batch renaming).

She doesn't want to install a trial version of Photoshop for this - can Bridge alone be downloaded, too? (I'm not into Lightroom, but I could probably try if I really had to - other options would be better, though._

Does anyone know of any free software for sorting and renaming, please?
