Very good idea to have a way to reduce the visual impression of a massive wall of impossible to do tasks. Having the list in order of due date does have some advantages. Perhaps that could be retained but with additional visual identification added for each category of challenge. Heading? Font? Color? Icon? Emoji? Web page graphic design is harder than it looks. Probably worthy of a systematic development approach.

And I agree with those who favor adding the submission due dates right on the front page, even though they can be found elsewhere.

It's not like anybody is forced to enter all of them........

I like the way you think. I personally enter the ones I want to and have time for. I can't run willy-nilly all over the place trying to enter every challenge posted. I am retired but simply don't have that pleasure of hopping in my car driving 40 or 50 miles to get just the perfect photo. I do love looking through the different challenges and voting on them. I learn something new all the time. Some of the photos are extraordinary pieces of art and you should be very proud of what you do even if you don't make it to the top.

I need them to be in chronological order by ending date. I'm anal and not very smart.

YES

LydiaI love the idea of clearly listing the challenge submission deadline along with the challenge topic on the front page (in addition to the countdown display).

That would make the eight easier to shoot for, IMO.

It's more work for us SC, but as a member, I am happy to see more challenges. The more different topics open, the more chances I will enter!

I still also strongly promote having more hidden gem and broad topic challenges because it allows you to take advantage of the challenges to display/use more of your work. Anonymous ratings in challenges are the advantage of DPC, but it doesn't help if you can't use your shots because they were taken at the wrong time or of the wrong subject. Hidden Gem challenges and free studies are among the most widely entered challenges.

I like the idea of 8 challenges open at a time. Maybe there would be some way to change the layout of the list so it wouldn't look so intimidating. (Maybe Week 1, Week 2, Free Studies?)

I don't mind the current eight choices to shoot for at any given time.

Another couple of graphic considerations ... might it be helpful to have the actual due-date in addition to (or instead of) the countdown-to-deadline? Also, I think the editing rule set should be in something more obvious than the current light-gray type.

My vote - keep it as it is.

I would like to give my humble opinion as well. First the facts:

a) There is an inflation in challenges (which is rather good, depending on various factors not further analyzed for the moment)
b) A 2 week submission period is established (positive)
c) There are mainly 3 distinctive type of challenges, regarding post processing (needs to be reconsidered)

The purpose is the inflation of participants and (or) overall users/members of the site.
Everyone will benefit from stronger competition although the chances to be honored are reduced.

So, according to the best of my knowledge and experience, inflation of the participants is not directly related to the inflation of the challenges.
Rather the opposite happens in true life, because simply put, the more rare something is the more expensive and desirable is perceived by people/consumers.
The aforementioned applies at this stage, in which the Admins and (supposedly) everyone else desires more participants/voters.

I think Waitingsilence put it right; 6 challenges seems to be better than 8. Let's increase the participants first, then reconsider 8 or more challenges.

As was mentioned earlier, deciding this scheduling issue is one of the things which has held up the next DPL season, as the change in schedule will require major recoding and we (Langdon) wanted to be sure the change would stick before undertaking that task.

I'm not as active around here as I used to be, but having more options to shoot for (or shoehorn my shots into) has increased my participation a bit recently. Six topics (not counting the 2 FSs) seems about right ... since the experiment began I'd guess about half the topics are things I'd like to shoot for at any given time (my actual participation is way less, sorry, life gets in the way). If there were fewer options, I (or others like me) might check in less often, particularly where the current set was filled with less interesting topics (to me, not you). As a result, overall participation might decline again. Or not (Hotel California). So I'd vote to keep it as is.

Or just bring back the DPL. Then you won't have any problem filling the challenges. :-)

That's most likely never going to happen.

(of course, I don't enter challenges either. I might go back to doing so, however, if it were fewer challenges at a time with more entries.)

Sure, give the good example...
31 entries in 8 years...

My personal participation doesn't change the FACT that we're over-saturated. Simply not enough active members for 8 concurrent challenges while keeping entries at a high enough level. In my case, the number of entries actually keeps me from participating. Not because I don't want to enter that many, but because of the site clutter, the thin-spreading of voting and the over-saturation of imagery.

I like it the way it is also. I like having the choices and an excuse to check in several times a day.

How can you say that? There are 8 challenges open for entry currently. We used to have 4 open at one time.

The number of challenges presented each week (or year) is the same. Having more of them open at the same time doesn't add to the total number of challenges offered.

Well, I guess there are two questions presented then in terms of the number of challenges ... so, NOT exactly.

Ok, yes, there may be the same number of challenges to enter in a given year - however, the DPChallenge front page sure looks cluttered and there ARE more (a greater number) of challenges being displayed on the home page now - twice as many as there used to be. It's very cluttered.
