Raking light doesn't have to be the only light.

Yeah, but that's not HDR, that's tone mapping. What most people think of as "HDR" is these exaggeratedly/dramatically tone-mapped renditions that, as often as not, come from single exposures. From a purist's point of view, a *true* HDR image is one where you couldn't even TELL it was HDR unless you'd seen one of the original exposures and realized how extreme the contrast was in the scene.
