We never DQ without seeing an original, unless it's for something like a copyright statement on the entry, so we'll know when we see the EXIF.

So maybe I missed something. Does an original need to be submitted with every entry?

I suspect the usual trust is placed in us all, as with the date-stamp. You only get caught out when you send in the original. But do not expect mercy then...

And if your image has only a slither of in-focus area, or miles and miles of perfect DOF focus, expect to hear the whistle blowing.

Could you stack a lot of f8's to get the whole image sharp and pass the test?

The challenge has been updated with a flag to require compliance with the aperture specification. We're allowing a tolerance of .2 in either direction, as some P&S cameras can be sloppy that way; you set them to f/8 aperture priority and they return, say, f/7.9 in the EXIF.

In early versions of Photoshop, "Save For Web" used to strip all metadata. Now (probably for a number of versions back) it has options about how much metadata to save with the output (drop down box above the "color table":
* None
* Copyright
* Copyright and Contact Info
* All Except Camera Info
* All

But, as Robert just posted while I am typing, users must submit original files with EXIF when an image is considered for possible DQ, so a jpg 700 kb entry submission without metadata is not a problem.

Unfortunately, that's correct. No legacy lenses. No lensbabies on this one either :-)

And no Leica M cameras. Leica only estimates the aperture based on the light hitting the sensor as there is no electronic aperture information passed from the lens to the camera. Chances are, even when shot at f8, it won't necessarily register f8 on the EXIF. Conversely, the camera could incorrectly register f8 when the image was shot at a different setting.

Yep, I was just checking my Rokinon 85mm exif:

The f/stop, focal length, and lens are all invalid data. :(

I knew there was a reason I went ahead and picked up the kit lens with my A7m2! :-) I'll have to put it back in my camera bag (hmmm ... actually put it ON the camera). LOL

You know, the challenge is f/8 -- if you shoot at F8 you may experience unexpected results, and experience a horrible f8 ... but we will f8 you if you absolutely master the technique, making a ribbon a virtual f8 accompli ...

What we need is an F42 - that would be the answer to life, the universe and everything :)

The old motorsport photography maxim was "f/8 at 1/500". Used to get fairly good results in the film days...

with the Leica Mono and Leica lenses that are not 6bit coded there is quite a bit of guesswork done by the camera regarding f-stop I have shot off a set of photos at f2.8 and had readings of f1.5 so I might have to miss this one out which is a shame.

I use MF lenses with my XT1 but that would say f0

I tend to do that too.

Although I'm tiring of the recent amount of "free study" challenges, I do like it that this one at least requires someone to learn something about his camera to meet the topic, if he doesn't already know.

Seems like it should be DQ'd if it's not f/8, though... otherwise it's truly just another Free Study.
