For those who wanna.....

Best of 2015 · Advanced Editing

32 days and 11 hours left to submit.
01/16/2015 08:44:40 AM · #2
Having the submission period for one to two weeks prior to the start of voting insures that the participants are interested and engaged, and that excitement is up. Most of these people become engaged (and commenting) voters as well. I fear a lot of entries will go in too soon, and in the many months that follow, these people will forget, lose interest, die... A 200+ entry challenge is already a daunting task to vote and comment on. Having it further inflated with entries from participants who possibly aren't even looking doesn't help matters.

Absolutely. But easier to clean up an automation error now rather than waiting until actual issues arise. From responses to decisions that hinge on editing rules, we know DPC has a sizable group of members willing to focus on discussing the smallest nuances of definitions and rules. Picking out the nits can morph into a chimpanzee-like mutual grooming activity. [Inserts appropriate mental image then dashes away into the underbrush].

Back on the main point of the thread, I think that announcing "Best Of" challenge ahead of time is a good idea. New members (they do exist each year) can be feel more at home when more things are made obvious and easier to understand. Submitted images will remain invisible to others until voting begins. Keeping track of "best so far" images and swapping out tentative entries for better ones along the way will be an interesting exercise for some people. I'm not concerned about having a bit of screen real estate occupied perpetually by the annual opportunity. Looks similar to the space occupied endlessly by the monthly challenge listing.

Now I just need to start making better images so I can submit something.

Currently the attestation for submitting to Best of 2015 states:
"I submit that my entry was based on photograph(s) taken with a digital camera on or between Jan. 15th 2015 and Jan. 14th 2016." The end date looks like an unintended error, perhaps due to automation for the typical challenge where image date range and submission date range are the same.

Having submission deadline mid-January allows for careful decisions. But to be in keeping with the challenge title, maybe that should be corrected to:
"... taken with a digital camera on or between Jan. 1st 2015 and Dec. 31st 2015"

I think it is a neat idea, and I am wondering if there will be more entries because of this approach. I have to agree with bobnospum's point about looking at the same challenge for a whole year, but if we get a significant increase in entries, I would say it is worth it.

Worth a try I say.

This new plan has made something clear to me that I'd missed before. The "Best of" challenge is actually the "2nd Best of" ...or for that matter if someone enters their 12 bast shots of the year in consecutive Free Studies, it could be the "13th Best of" Challenge. Just sayin...

Two birds with one stone. By making it Expert Editing, you can enter something that wasn't eligible for a Monthly Free Study since those are always Advanced Editing. And to rehash what as I brought up about the Best of 2014 challenge. A truly Best of .. would remove as many restrictions as possible.

This is cool! Not in yet, but it's nice to know I can enter throughout the year.

Wünderbar!
I wasn't sure, I thought I did that before, but I didn't remember if it was only after voting began.

You can do this on any challenge -- after you upload your entry, there is a link in the left column to upload your original/editing notes. It's most commonly used for people who plan to be traveling, but AFAIK there's nothing to stop you from doing it any time ...

Since my first "best of" here, I've kept a folder of possibles on my hard drive. The possibles don't all get in there, but it does give me a starting pool as well as an idea as to where to start the culling. I like this, though. Trick for some will be to remember not to delete the original - and to remember to remove the entry should something disastrous in the nature of a hard drive crash destroy one.

in this case, the option to pre-emptively upload an original with editing steps should be a given.

Not sure I really like this idea
Do you really want to look at this announcement for the next 12 months?
Do you really want people who join the site early in the year, then disappear never to be seen again, yet still be part of this challenge?

Not sure what problem this is trying to solve. Do we really think it is hard to look through your hard drive and find a photo in January and then enter it?

question though, as this is open to members...
what happens if someone is a member, enters, then does not continue being a paid member. does their entry get pulled? if so when? Immediately? when rollover happens to Start the challenge? does it stay in? if it gets pulled immediately and the person re-ups, will their entry be put back auto-magically?

given this is a new venture, bugs have not been encountered yet, but will likely arise - better to plan for them and try to fix in advance...

probably stays, i think i was entered in a challenge once, and then my membership expired and i was still entered.

How cool is that? Fun idea! I hadn't noticed yet, so I thought this thread was a joke at first. :)

I love this idea. Stops images getting forgotten and mothballed.

An interesting idea. Wonder how it will affect the quality of free study entries.
