It's a manual focus e series 100mm f2.8 lens. can be used on older nikon slr's and dslr's like the D200.

That's a very open-ended question. :) Would *I* personally buy it? No. I have no immediate use for a 100mm prime. Doesn't mean someone else (even you) wouldn't jump all over it... For a sharp/fast prime at 100mm, it's a very cost-effective lens.

What do *you* want to do with it?

A "more answerable" question might be -- is this a good price for this lens? Sure. Assuming it's in good shape, anywhere from $75-$110 is reasonable for the 100/2.8E.

Hmmm...seeing that I bought my prime lens, a 50mmm 1.4 lens for $150, it would probably be redundant for me to buy that lens.

But if it does it for you, go for it! :-)

Lens I found this for more information...

I would certainly ask alot of questions...how long has it been theirs, why are they selling? and I'd ck out e-bay for a comparison in price...

I love my manual Vivitar and wouldn't trade it for the world...it's a sweet, sweet lens

I personally don't trust anything that doesn't have a picture included.

It looks you already have a MF prime. I guess you will achieve a softer DOF with the 100mm. And for that price... Maybe it's worth it? You want it, you buy it ;) A quick google search revealed the potential in that lens.

I've never used the 100mm MF, but I have the f2.5 105mm, and it is probably the best lens in my bag....

I picked up my 50mm 1.8 E Series from almost an identical posting locally.
Check the aperture blades- operate them by moving the aperture lever on the lens mount with you finger, ensure there is no sticking or anything. They may appear shiny from being old and used quite a bit, but this is okay. Just make sure you don't see any oil or something like that on the blades from a botched repair.
I don't necessarily use it all the time because I've since picked up an AF 50 1.8, but the photos it turns out are distinctly different and have a very pleasing appearance that I can't quite put into words. The photos look decidedly different than the AF. I would almost argue that its sharper and has better color rendition, but it's difficult to describe.

PS I should add, $150 is the price I paid for that little lens, new. And it is by far my fastest lens and giving me very good images, thankyaverymuch!

You do mean 50 1.8, right?
$150 for a 1.4 is insane...

I have a 50mm mf lens that I use a lot. I bought another lens off of the person that is selling this one. Actually it was a buy one get one free deal and I sold him a lens I wasn't using. I think I'm going to pass on it beings I am holding out for a 60mm f2.8- my dream lens at the moment. I'm hoping for my birthday because it would be awsome for portraits. I was thinking the 100mm might give me a little more to work with right now.

Don't. Pay $125-150 for a 105mm f/2.5 lens in good condition. It's way better; a legend, actually.

All of these subversions are the same, optics-wise... just make sure it is AI-S, AI, or AI CONVERTED. If it doesn't say one of those three, it won't mount on your D200.

105mm f/2.5 Nikkor-P (AI CONVERTED ONLY)
105mm f/2.5 Nikkor-P.C (AI CONVERTED ONLY)
105mm f/2.5 Nikkor (AI CONVERTED)
105mm f/2.5 Nikkor AI
105mm f/2.5 Nikkor AI-S

The first three subversions have serial numbers from 407301 to 73xxxx, and are non-AI, so you should only buy those if they are AI CONVERTED. Serial numbers from 740001 to the 105xxxx's are AI or AI-S, so no worries there. Again, all should be virtually identical in terms of optics... some of the newer ones may have better coating than the older ones, and the Nikkor-P has only single-coating.

there are a lot of reviews that say that the series E line is a budget line from nikon, the lenses arent even branded nikkor which could indicate that these arent up to the nikkor standard. the 105 ais can be found cheap and is brilliant, especially like the built-in hood

Yeah, it's basically "cheap line, not good enough to be called Nikkor" vs. "legendary lens, considered a benchmark for sharpness." I'd say go with the newest AI-S (AIS) version of the 105mm f/2.5, as they all seem to go for about the same price, and the newer ones may have some non-optical benefits over the older ones (possibly better lubrication, have been around for less time so stuff hasn't had time to break or go dry, smoother focus, possibly better multicoating, and your camera may actually recognize it as a real lens). See my post above for a list of the different versions... difference in price will probably be about $30 between the newest and the oldest, so go with the newest.
