Please take a moment to provide some feedback in regard to an automatic watermarking feature that was discussed late last year.

//www.dpchallenge.com/survey.php?SURVEY_ID=5

The survey will be available until the 1st of February.

Seen, taken, thank you Langdon! I know this has been a hot issue of late. It is nice to know (to quell the swarms) that this issue is up for a consensus of the participants of the site. For a long time it seems people have been asking for something along these lines. I don't think a solution will be easily obtained though. Some people with loud voices will tend to sway the population. They always do and the sway seems to be (from previous threads) somewhat divided. I hope this survey brings out all who participate on the site so we (really you) can get an honest feel for how the participants feel.

I'm assuming "our own watermark" could be an empty file, right? That way, if we wish to opt-out but others wish to opt in, we're not voting against their wants?

I don't much care for watermarks, but if they're tastefully done and it makes people feel better, then I'd rather see that than lose people.

I hope that an opt-out feature for those of us who'd rather not use them will be available.

I have to ask of your definition of 'tastefully done'. I find that a bit too vague for me to really give you a decent and measured opinion as what I consider tasteful might be a total eyesore to someone else.

Could you take it to completion and include dimensions? So, instead of saying "don't worry, it'll be tasteful!" or words to that effect, could you change it to something like 'a 40x20 pixel watermark would be applied to a lower corner of the image so as not to detract from the viewing space'?

Specifics, if you please. You're not giving people a fair chance to critique an implementation into a paid service by with-holding details, likewise, if you don't have the details, don't ask the question and wait until you do to carry out surveys and polls thereby giving the poll taker/voter a definite article to evaluate.

Just my opinion you understand, but I don't work on assumptions.

To clarify, watermarks are not on images during voting right?

Personally, I find any watermark distracting, and I loathe them to no end; but I understand the need for them, given the number of dishonest people who take images to post on their own site *sigh*. I dislike them, because I'm honest. I know others aren't.

However, it should be up to the photographer's discretion to add or remove a watermark at any time. I don't think a system forced watermark is a solution.

I suspect that if the decision to implement watermarks is agreed upon, then your concerns will be addressed in a subsequent poll and forum.

On another note, I would favor the options of "No Watermark / My Watermark / DPC Watermark" on each individual image.

If the DPC watermark is something like then the dpc watermark is fine for me, otherwise a personal watermark.

Something like this shouldn't be a problem... I still can vote :|

I think everyone is missing the question where it asks if other members or registered user won't see the watermarking?!? If this is implemented it WON"T EVEN AFFECT YOU, nor anyone else, except those that phish websites for pictures. Of course if you want to be more limiting then you'll pick members only.

My only Problem with this is there has been a number of cases of registered users stealing images, so imo it has to be one in all in.

And for the issue of 'tasteful' the survey isn't asking what you feel is tasteful that would be done at a later date, just that if in your opinion it was tasteful

I again want to make a point for the option to upload a second file for the challenge with your own watermark (color, opacity, size), in a position where you want it, with the opacity like you want it.

So
file 1 watermark-free is for the challenge
file 2 watermarked by the pg himself is for post-challenge

Have some script running to check if there is not too much difference between the two (to avoid post-challenge updates on the file and whining about the score).

Watermarking foremost should be the responsibility of the photographer. DPC only has to fascilitate it.

Question 2, A or B
Question 3, B
Question 4, A or B

That basically sums up what you said, except the watermark would be in the same place in each entry. Why is that such a big deal that you want to upload a whole other image with it moved over 2 px?

I have recently uploaded and watermarked about 500 pics to other locations. I have used all 4 corners of my photos, with different sizes, different opacities, matching shades. It is not about 2px movements. It is about putting a watermark where it hurts the photo the least. And no automatic watermark script will do that for you.

Are you seriously going to put something important in both the bottom-left and bottom-right corners of the image?

Yes.

"It is about putting a watermark where it hurts the photo the least."

I would hate to see users making their own watermarks. I could tune out a small DPC logo, but not the variety that individuals would apply.

I would also like to see a script that allowed you to specify your own location for the watermark anywhere on the image. This should be moderately straightforward to code using co-ordinates drawn from a click on the image.

I agree with both parts of this comment - well said.

why not just put a check box in the profile (opt-in)
[] watermark challenge pictures after voting

and a check box on each pic
[] exempt from watermark

The semi-transparent Gif layer works pretty well for most uses IMHO.

That way those that worry about these issues can have watermarks on their lovely pictures and those that understand that any pic on the net can be stolen can just carry on without having to muck about. If you have a pic that you care so much about that you can't bear to have it online without a watermark, AND you can't bear to see it with a generic watermark, perhaps it is best to keep said image off the web?
