I didn't get many comments on this and would like some feedback. The score was okay but I'm wondering why it didn't score better and what I could do to improve it. Is it just not very exciting?

C'mon...lay it on me!

Personally I think it should have scored at least a 5.9 or 6.0

What I think might have held it back a little is the processing. Parts of the image look a bit plastic (just a little bit). Mainly his face and pants. Otherwise it is a really nice shot, Composed very well, Lighting is very nice, the action tells a story.

Well....forgive me if I don't express this well, but I'm trying to learn how to critique.

It doesn't have much going on. It looks like a guy with a hockey stick skating.

It's fine technically, but there's no wild billboard uniform, no windup for a slapshot, no crunch of a full bodycheck, no ice chips flying from blades digging into the ice........it just doesn't have the impact that I'm conditioned to for "Hockey Player".

Does that help?

I gave it a 5. Probably for about the same reasons as mentioned earlier. The additional thing I notice is that the colors are kind of blah. Except for the red gloves, he kind of blends into the wall and ice behind him. I consider anything above a 5.5 to be a good showing. I'd also hoped my own entry would do better, but I also recognize it had it's share of flaws too.

Thanks guys. You've all made good points. It's kind of what I was thinking.

The picture is good, I like it, but the Topaz effect, as always, spoils an image :(

I think if it is used in modest application, it can add some dimension to an image without screaming "Topaz!!". Some photos respond to it better than others.

Have you ever used Topaz?

Or do you just dismiss it out of hand because of the exaggerated images you've seen?

I hardly noticed it in this image. It's not exaggerated at all and I find it improves the image, giving it texture.

It wasn't topaz, it was Lucisart. Different strokes for different folks. I love the look. I like topaz too.

I agree. I didn't think it was overcooked! LOL I have over done it on some.

I'm sure we all have at one point, that's the learning process involved with new tools. I know this real estate agent who uses HDR in her photos of the interior of the homes she's selling and they're amazing. You can't tell she uses any HDR software, it's so subtle and so beautiful I'm sure her sales are up because of it. I'll try to find an image of hers to post here.

Love to see it! I'm really trying to learn more about hdr and tone mapping.
BTW...I was thinking of trying to get an olympus team together for the dpl. Interested?

No, I've a bit more sense than that ;)
If I can see that an image has been Topazed/Lucis'd/HDR'ed then it's too much for me. Using it invisibly - there lies the skill ;)

Sure. Let's see if colorcarnival, Wildiris, MPRPRO, Rmac, bvy, and some others are interested. Let's kick some Cannikon butt! lol

I see a boring background and an HDR tonemapped look. That, to me, implies trying to "rescue" an okay shot by using HDR.

So..you think people tonemap images to "rescue" them from being boring? Right.
Like I said..different strokes for different folks.

I would have given it a 4, reason being that during hockey lots of exciting things happen that convey motion- swinging the stick back to take the shot, just after a shots been taken, when 2 guys are tussling over the puck, when they do that jump turn thing to stop suddenly... all of these things would have been more interesting than a guy just skating.

Perhaps if you'd waited and watched for 10 minutes you could have got a more exciting shot?

Hey Tez, yes I know it wasn't exciting. I took many shots and did have shots of two guys tussling over the puck. I chose this one because I liked the expression on his face mostly. I figured some people would think it was boring. Thanks! :)

I pretty much agree with this, though I'd probably have scored it a 6. Steps I might try to address these conditions would be to try and heighten the contrast and brightness a bit with Curves and/or high-radius Unsharp Mask, and I might take advabtage of the Advanced rules in effect to select the wall and blur it, to increase the perception of three-dimensionality by creating an artificially shallow DOF.

Also, if a lot of voters didn't recognize it as distinctly "your style" they may have voted lower in consideration of the challenge topic.

When it's a boring background or other element in it, yes. Way to take it out of context ;)
