Forget eliminating stats or implementing Codes of Conduct... we can solve 99% of all of DPC's perceived problems (and save some of us a TON of online time) by eliminating the forums!! No rants! No God or no god! No troll voting complaints! Just think of the peace and quiet....

Of course, everyone would have to go elsewhere to get their photography questions answered, but lately those are few and far between anyway, so I don't see that as an issue...

But I would have to go elsewhere to get my daily requirement of over the top drama.

You obviously haven't been on Modelmayhem. The most heated arguments here look like pillow fights compared to the throwdown claws out bouts that occur over there.

Or we just get SC to start locking more threads.
11/19/2009 10:33:23 AM · #6
Maybe we could automate it so that every thread locks after the OP and 3 responses. :P

Watch...I'm going to turn this thread into a rant in 3 words:

OBAMA RELIGION ABORTION

Or at least eliminate the forums under the 'Other' section (Personal life, general discussion, rant) - I use them myself, but tbh why have them here when there are a thousand topic-specific forums already out there dealing with the subjects that come up time and time again?

Dpreview has an 'open talk' forum, but even that says "Welcome to the Open Talk Forum, the place for threads which would be Off-Topic in other forums, however this must still be related to digital photography"

I suspect the reason is that these types of forums and threads are quite important in building a sense of community for the site as a whole. I like them. They often make me angry or cringe but thats life really.

I love the sense of sarcastic altruism here :D

Of course, the forums can be ugly, but they can be great too. I'd hate to lose them. All it really takes is a personal responsibility to not get involved, a little more effort to send out those 'report post' tickets instead of responding, and the like. Yes, that's a little bit idealistic, and I'm not exactly the poster child for not responding (sheepish grin), but for those with a little more will-power than I, it's very attainable.

Sarcasm....dang....and I was about to throw my full support behind it. Can we at least do a poll?

I think the forums & comments are good... less - condescending tone, general worthless mouthiness & self promotion would be helpful.

What I'm curious about is why every time someone gets into a snit about something, they demand that the site admins change something to concede to their needs/wishes.

Whatever happened to the idea that you got to a site, see how it operates, like it and participate, or don't like it and move on to see if you can find something better?

This whole change this, make a rule, I don't like that and you should change it, thing is starting to get REALLY old.

Sounds like good ole consumerism… but look what that did to the American auto manufacturers.

May the best photography site win!

Why is it that anytime someone starts a thread you have to post something in it. 8-P

Don't put a site suggestions forum if you don't want site suggestions.

Ok, kids....what the crap did I miss earlier this week? The whole place is just snarly, lol and referring to things that apparently I'm missing. (Well, maybe I'm just an idito, but let's not go there FIRST! :P)

If we eliminate the forums, I can't come bitch and complain and get my 6,000 words in for the day and then my DH will have to sit and listen to me....'sides...the forums are better than the movies!! Muahahaha!

There's a considerable difference between a well thought out proposal and whining because you don't get your way.

This site has a tremendous amount to offer virtually any photographer, yet some insist on its changing to suit them.

That doesn't seem to be "In the Spirit of Community Participation".

Ironic, a non-photography thread complaining about non photography threads that complain.
