I’m going to have to wipe my computers HD and reinstall everything. My computer was a built computer and is running Win XP Media edition. I have all the software required including motherboard, chipset, video and audio cards, and the software I have purchased since buying the computer.

I have been having a few issues; one of them is a windows error that pops up several times a day everyday. Something about a windows issue and it ask me if I want to send to window tech or not. When I say no it does not crash my computer, it still works ok.

The next issue is my dual layer CD-RW drive. It will read anything but when I want to burn something to the drive it gives me an error [D:\ not accessible].

The next issue is my 3.5 floppy drives which is built into my card reader. My father-in-law wanted me to transfer some pictures from floppy to CD for him and when I put the floppy disk in I also get the same error [A:\not accessible]

I have tried several DVD and CD's along with floppy disk and the same errors pop up. I have been told it could be my controller but why would the card reader work (reading and write)?

I have been told that my DVD and Floppy drives have failed. But if that’s the case why am I able to read and install from DVD?

I was told by a local computer store, the same place that built my computer that one of the windows updates has been known to cause the drive: / not accessible error but he could not remember which one.

My question is what do you think may be wrong and after reinstalling my computer should I do all Windows updates prior to installing any drivers?

Here is the "A" drive error and the DVD drive "D" is very similar.

Thanks for you help
Scott

Start simple:

Open the case, is there a ribbon data cable attached the back of the floppy drive and from there to the motherboard?

If so gently push the cables on both the floppy drive and the mainboard to ensure they are secure.

Is the power cable properly attached to the back of the floopy drive?

Is the floppy drive properly configured in the system BIOS?

can you copy the files from the floppies to the hard drive?

lets start there...

Hm, I think that the problem is as described in that microsoft article I posted a link to. The error would have been different if the floppy was not recognized at all. Why don't you start with increasing the timing for the microprocessor as described and see if it helped.

I'm going to shutdown my computer and go inside to check the cables on the floppy and see if they are loose or have came unpluged. I will be back in a few.

1 & 2. The ribbon is connected and I made sure it was a good fit (gently).
3. Yes the power cable is connected and I made sure it was a good fit.
4. I don't know how to configure the "A" drive in bios
5. Still can't transfer files

Did you try updating the registry as per this article? If yes, I'll try to figure something else. If not, try it.

Download and Run Hijack This first before you do anything. you may find Tons of stuff that you should remove. I've had similar problems in the past, but all went away once Hijack this was installed and ran.

You aren't out anything if you do this as if it just doesn't work, you still can do all of the other.

Thanks srdanz and dknourek for your help and advice. I have not updated my registry yet but I will try that before I dive into reinstalling my computer; it can't hurt.
If you can think of anything else feel free to PM me or post. And I greatly appreciate your advice.

to make it easier on you, copy this into a text file, name the text file something with .reg (i.e. sdw.reg), save it, and double-click on the file.
It should ask you something along the lines of 'do you want to update your registry' - do it and reboot after that.

Can't mess it up more than you have it messed up now. Copy from the line below to the end of the post.

bergiekat, I downloaded Hijack and scanned. It found about a page of items to fix. I picked they ones I thought should be deleted and did so. Rebooted and still having the same problem.

Thanks for the program. It will come in handy.

Now I'm off to update my reg per post by srdanz. Hope this works, if not I guess I will have to reinstall everything. Glad I have a external HD and have all my photographs and important files backed up on it.

here goes. I hope it works.
Thanks everyone.

I did a copy/paste of the above and saved it as a .reg file on my desktop. I closed all open windows and ran the update then rebooted. Same problems.
I guess I'm going to wipe my HD and reinstall (tomorrow) and see if that works.

The first thing I install when doing a complete redo is winXP. Should I update windows to service pack 3 and all other windows updates before starting to install my drivers for hardware such as the motherboard, chipset, and graphics card?

Again thanks for all the advice everyone.
Scott

Scott,
it sure looked like it would work. There is this KB too, refers to CD ROM. You've tried some of the things in it, try those that you haven't tried yet.

When you reformat everything, install those drivers first, and then run the updates. Also note if the original installation works fine. That way you'll be able to tell if it was the upgrade that made your machine fail or if it is something more serious.

good luck!

@SDW

Why do you have Pure Networks Platform installed on your computer???? If it's something you installed, why don't you go to the control panel >> add/remove software panel and simply uninstall the sucker. That will certainly cure that particular pop up. Then try reinstalling it and it will probably work. One of the updates may not play well with that program. When you reinstall it might place a critical file back in that the update removed.
