Whi is this bad for photography? It seems that the hdr setting is an option on the camera and every picture is not hdr. What is the difference if hdr is done in-camera or in Photomatix? Using this logic, you can says photography died everytime some new "lab" technology was introduced.

I presume he's focusing on the cartoonish aspect of HDR imaging, where people can produce wildly "unrealistic" results. If that technology is brought into straight-from-the-camera results, he may be opining, then "straight photography" as we know it and love it may go the way of all film, so to speak.
Except that doesn't seem to be what's happening here, where the results are actually quite "tame" by HDRI standards, and consist of expanding the dynamic range only... All that "weird" stuff still requires a heavy hand with an editor to achieve...

Yeah. I'm really happy about the k7. I doubt I shall ever buy it, but it looks like a wonderful, compact and well sorted camera. I hope other manufacturers learn from it. And the hdr is just the icing on the cake for those of us who can't afford the forgiving, massive full frame sensors and rarely use tripods.
From the pictures I've seen, it's nothing like enthusiastic tone mapping. It's just a little better at not losing detail in the highlights, which is something I think we can all get behind. |

| The miniature filter also looks interesting. It's suppose to give a mock tilt and shift look. Lensbaby without lensbaby? |

I wouldn't call this HDR actually, and I am not so hot on it as well.
Having 3 JPEGs merged together with no control whatsoever on the outcome is not what I'd be looking for. Not being able to separate these exposures so you can mask them or adjust them according to your liking, for sure not something I'd like to have. Mostly I am sticking with the options we currently have :)

mh but what about our Fuji S5/S3 slr's? they were they first to produce an in-camera "hdr" image by using two different sizes of pixels on the sensor and thus obtaining a higher dynamic range than most other dslr's (around 11EV).
now they're just taking it a step further (if not a step too far) by overlaying 3 images. though from the images provided on that site the pictures do not look too cartoonish so i bet many people will use it for good. |

| Photography will never die. Not as long as there are photographers out there. Lightmanipulators/lightcomputers will evolve, sure, but they will never be photographers. |

Why not? HDR = High dynamic range. A 17EV range seems like a high dynamic range to me. |

The in-camera HDRI technology that Pentax introduced with its K-7 model is a very interesting idea and sure is a welcome development. I'm not going to buy it but I'm looking forward to see how this will sell.
