I remember a few threads that mention problems with some canon cameras with respect to maximum CF card size. I think someone was having problems with a Rebel and 16GB card - the rebel only saw 8GB.

Next week I am traveling to Italy (Hooray!), but I would like to leave my laptop home. I want to get the most out of my 50D, which means 20+ MB raw files. Right now I only have 5GB total worth of cards, which corresponds to ~250 pics.

I am thinking of picking up 4 x 8GB cards, 2 X 16GB cards or 1 x 32GB card. When you guys need a lot of storage, are you afraid to put all of your eggs in one basket - is it better to spread the files over multiple smaller cards? Also will me 50D be able to use all the space on the larger (16 and 32GB) cards?

Yes, I recommend more smaller cards. If one card goes bad or lost, you still have the rest. I've also found that with most media (hard drives, etc.), the larger the capacity the more prone they are to errors, and the more you'll have to recover if there's a problem.

My camera takes much smaller pictures (2-4MB), and I use 500MB and 2GB cards -- I figure if a card holds about 150-200 pictures it's enough. The main reason I got the bigger cards was for video captures, where the files got too big for the smaller cards.

For your purposes/file size, the 4GB size seems about right -- around a 200 frame capacity, and easy to just back up the whole card onto a single DVD. With my 500MB cards, I know when to make a backup CD ...

You could also consider getting a "digital wallet" -- basically a portable hard drive/card reader combo which lets you back up the images without a computer. Also, I've heard there are a lot of places where you can have the files burned to CD/DVD for you ...

I have considered getting one of these and I probably will at some point when I am going to be going away for an extended period of time.

I have a 50D and i have two 8 gb cards, and six 2 gb cards. I use my 8 gb cards when I am going to be shooting lots of shots in burst so that I don't have to worry about filling the card too quickly. I use my 2 gb cards for my general purpose and landscape shots.

I don't like to put all my eggs in one basket.

For the price of one of these (eg Epson P-3000, P-6000, P-7000), these days you can buy yourself a netbook computer with the same amount of storage space.

Thanks for the responses guys. I will be planning a pilgrimage - i mean trip to B&H to pick the cards up either tomorrow. I think I will do 3 or 4 x 8GB, since I already have 2 x 2GB and 1 x 1GB cards.

I think the hardest part or my trip will be not splurging my tax refund on a gitzo traveler tripod :)

True, but there are cheaper options out there. We've got a pair of Nexto Extremes for travelling - Amazon are currently listing 500GB models for £220, a price you'd struggle to find a 160GB netbook for, let alone something that size.

I have to agree with GeneralE, I have a Canon 50d and I have 6 8gb cards and 1 4 gb card, i wished i have half and half, 4 and 8, for just going to a photo shoot or around the town 4 gb is plenty, but for burst shots and sports the 8gb is nice because my card doesnt fill up as fast, I did have a problem with 1 of my 8gb cards, sandisk but thier software was able to recover the pictures. Abesofmaine has a great rebate program right now for memory cards, i picked them up so cheap i feel guilty. 3x8gb cards for under $100(visa rebate)
