I have Windows Vista as my OS, and while I was using CS3 had no problem clicking on a .jpeg anywhere on my hard drive and getting it to open in CS3. Now that I upgraded to CS4, I cannot get it to open in CS4 - just the Bridge. In order to open a .jpeg in CS4, I have to first open CS4, then use the program's File > Open to get a .jpeg to open in it.
I tried right clicking on a .jpeg and setting the properties to let this file type open using CS4 as the specified program, but only the Bridge shows up in the list of programs I can choose from. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem?

Is no one having this same problem? Or does no one want to reply to my threads? Lately it seems threads I post get pretty much ignored.

Try looking at the default file associations. It seems that it has been set so that by default .jpg opens with Bridge. Change the .jpg default to CS4. I have a Mac here but a PC in the office. If no one else posts where/how to do this, I will search it out and post when I get to the office in about an hour or so.

I don't understand what the problem really is here. Are you trying to open a jpeg with CS4 or are you trying to drag a jpeg into cs4, or are you just trying to open a jpeg using windows picture gallery?

Also when you upgraded did you ever get a window that asked you which files it wanted you to open?

(BTW I don't have cs4 but I'm trying to help you)

To associate a file with a program
Open My Computer.
Double-click a drive or folder.
Right-click a file, and then click Open With. If Open With is not available, click Open.
Follow the instructions under the option that matches the dialog box you see:
Open With--Recommended Programs list

Under Programs, click the program in which you want the file to open, or click Browse to locate the program you want.
-or-
Click the look for the appropriate program on the Web link to search the Web for a program to open your file.

Open With--No Recommended Programs list

Under Programs, click the program in which you want the file to open, or click Browse to locate the program you want. You can also type a comment that provides information about the file type. This information will appear in the folder window under Details when you view the file in a folder.
-or-
Click the look for the appropriate program on the Web link to search the Web for a program to open your file.

Cannot open this file

Windows cannot find a program to open the file. In the Cannot open this file dialog box, do one of the following:

Click Use the Web service to find the appropriate program. This enables you to search the Web for the program that will open the file.
-or-
Click Select the program from a list to choose a program to open the file in the Open With dialog box.

Notes

To open My Computer, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
For some file types, you will right-click a file, point to Open With, and then click Choose Program.
To ensure that Windows always uses the same program to open the file, or any other file with the same file name extension, in the Open With dialog box, select the Always use this program to open these files check box.

This is copied from the Help Screen when File Associations is searched for using Windows help.

CEJ I appreciate the research you did to provide this solution. I had already done those things and still if I click on a .jpeg it will open in Bridge, but not straight into CS4.The list that I get when I try to assign the program I want to use does not include CS4. I have to do the Browse - and then I find the CS4 program, click it ... but then it still will not appear as a choice and the Bridge remains the default. May be an Adobe thing to force users into the Bridge first, but it is annoying as I hate when I do not get to choose for myself.

DD - I am simply trying to be able to double click a .jpeg file (whether it be in a folder or on my desktop) and have it pop open CS4 and appear there.

That's correct, Adobe seems to have done this. It's maddening. I don't have CS4 but I have heard from others who have this same association problem. It seems that Bridge is now so integrated into PS that it is by default the only access for file doubleclicks... At least, I have yet to hear of a fix for this...

Locate the image.

Right click >> Open with >> Chose Default Location.

Go to the root location of CS4.....C:/Program files etc..

Once you select CS4 this way, then it will work every time you double click an image of this file type.

As stated in my previous post this has been tried and does not work with this. Robt has posted that he has had others experience the same and it is an Adobe issue

Ill try to check whats different tonight but have Adobe CS4 Design and Web premium suites running on xp32, vista 32 and 64bit and have no troubles with the file associations.

*ETA* Im assuming also when you say CS4 you are talking about Photoshop CS4 or do you want it to open in ACR CS4?

I can get it to open in Bridge, and then from there into Camera Raw. I cannot get a .jpeg to open straight into Photoshop CS4, though when I had CS3 there was no problem.

Right, we're looking for a way to double-click a jpg on the desktop and have it open directly in CS4, bypassing Bridge/ACR entirely. This was easy to set the associations for in CS3 and earlier, but it seems unwilling to make that direct association in CS4, as if Adobe has set up Bridge as the only portal into CS4 now. We may be missing something, obviously, but Pug ain't the only one I have heard of having this problem.

Look in Photoshop preferences, it may be set to open JPEGs as RAW files. If that's the case, it would explain why it opens as it does. I'm on CS3 here at work, so I can't go fishing for where that setting is.
Your operating preferences just tell it to use Photoshop CS4, and Bridge is a part of Photoshop, so that preference is being honored.
One way to test for sure whether the preference is being paid attention to is to set JPEGs to open with something different, and verify that double-clicking then opens with the other app. Now change it back, and if you see the same behavior, then it's a Photoshop setting.
Also, make sure that you change the preference for both permutations of the file extension, JPEG and JPG...

Forgot I had my laptop with me, and that one has Vista on it, my current default for *.jpg is Windows Photo Gallery.

I think you said you tried this already but humor me ;)

1) Right click any jpg anywhere and select: "Open With > Choose Default Program..."

2) A new "Open With" window opens, Is Photoshop CS4 listed in the recomended programs? if Yes highlight it and make sure the option at the bottom of the window is checked saying "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" then select ok.

3) If Photoshop CS4 is not listed in the window do the following. select the "Browse" button from the lower right and navagate to where you have Photoshop CS4 located, By default it should be: "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\" in there you should see "Photoshop.exe" select that file and hit the "Open" button.

4) Once Photoshop CS4 is added go back to step #2

5) Here's one of the most important steps, save anything you have open and REBOOT your computer. I have found that some settings like this are lost if the computer is not shut down and restarted properly and sometimes if not always get reverted back to their former state.

Just checked back on this thread...I am not sure of the Bridge thing. I now have CS4 and when I click on an image file - .cr2 or .jpg - they both open directly in PS CS4 and all I did was a normal install, I have made no changes. Does it matter if it is Mac version?
03/04/2009 02:42:04 PM · #19
kirbic - CS$ preferences changed from the previous versions. The option you mention is not there anymore. You cannot choose to open .jpeg as RAW - at least not that I can find. You can open a .jpeg in Camera Raw and then make adjustments as if it were a RAW image.

dknourek - as stated several times now, I know how to use Windows and have already tried what you are saying several times. It is not a Windows problem - it is and Adobe issue. Thus the thread being titled CS4 problem. TY for the effort though.

Interesting - maybe Mac doesn't have the same issue with CS4. I would like to know if someone who has both Vista and CS4 have found a way around this

Hmmmmm...

I have Photoshop CS4 Extended (64-bit version) installed on a PC running Windows Vista Premium (64-bit version). Previous to seeing this discussion my default application for opening .jpg was set to 'Windows Photo Gallery' which is the operating system default.

I followed the steps outlined above by right-clicking a .jpg file to set a new default application. Photoshop CS4 did show up on my list... I selected it as default then applied the change... now when I double-click a .jpg file it is opened in CS4 just the way you'd like yours to run.

I think your problem is with Adobe and not with the operating system.

With CS4 comes an application called 'Version Cue Server' that you may have installed. You will want to read up on version cue. It is supposed to be used to help streamline actions between various Adobe Suite programs to "help" you with your workflow. :) It could be that it might be trying to "help" you by forcing Bridge to run first even though your default application for opening a .jpg in the operating system is set to CS4. In this case it may be acting a bit like Adobe Camera RAW does; that is, it always runs first when you double-click a RAW image before going into CS4.

That is something to investigate.

Alas, I don't have a fix for you, but I do have different behavior. I have Vista with PS CS4. I did a typical install. Before I saw this thread, my .jpeg was set to open in Windows Photo Gallery. I did the rt. click, open with, choose default program, browse, pick photoshop.exe, check the "always use" box. Now my .jpegs always open in photoshop CS4 directly. Works like a charm. Maybe there's an issue with a specific version/update?

edit: I see Steve's works normally as well. I think we're narrowing it down! I am also using CS4 Extended, by the way.

Well Im running on my laptop Windows Vista Home Premium and have no troubles switching the default applications and I have Adobe Web Premium CS3 and CS4 suites installed...

I've just spent 4 weeks or was that months trying to get CS4 to install. In the meantime I got better than ever with Gimp, Ifran that makes a good file browser and gives Exif - I've been taking Jpegs the while as gimp and ifran are not useful for RAW handling (Ifran does open them) and I even resorted to a switch to activate the old computer on the same screen/keyboard etc so that I could use CS3. And you think having to click twice on a jpeg. file is a problem?

My apologies, of course it's a problem or you wouldn't have started the thread. I can't really test my system out for the problem either, because jpegs will at present open in default Ifran. I start from bridge anyway, at least after I've transferred files to hard drive. Right click and 'open with' otherwise.

Oh dear - I just tried all that out and then altered the default programme to CS4. Jpeg.s now open direct into CS4. I'll check and see if that works direct from desktop (I don't have any loose files on the desktop of my shiny new pc).

Yepp, straight into CS4.

I used https://www.adobe.com/support/ to guide me through the painful installation trauma - I still have Adobe\Adobe PCD\cache\ on the desktop, instead of in C:\Program Files\Common Files\ where it was. I have no idea if moving that would help you, but it wouldn't harm to try. I suspect there are issues with previous file associations, as has been suggested.

Adobe support did the trick for me, after I'd given up on the usual prodding, kicking and asking friends and family...

The good news I have if you've read all through this (sorry), is that it apparently can be done.
03/04/2009 03:17:55 PM · #25
Well now I am even more perplexed since when I try it CS4 does not show up in my list of programs to use as default, and when I browse and pick it that way - it does not work either. I may have to just concede and let it open in Bridge.
