I am going to be shooting my brother's newborn baby girl's first pictures this weekend. I will be shooting in their home hopefully using natural light and I can use my 580EX either on cam or off cam shooting through an umbrella. I will likely opt to use the 580EX as fill through the umbrella making natural light my primary light source.

I would love to share some of your shots if you have done this before!!!

I just did a 3 month old yesterday. here is the link to his shoot. I used one softbox w/160 watt studio light to light the background, and then used my sb600 flash to bounce off the umbrella to light the baby with a reflector for fill light.

My son was 3 months old when I took this. I propped him up in the bathtub so that he was leaning against mom's chest.I was then able to set arrange his arms for the portrait.

I'm guessing the baby you will be working with is much younger though. Try to get pictures of the baby naked on mom's and dad's chest (belly against chest).

Good luck with your shoot!

My niece:

Pentax FA 50mm f/1.4 AF, Not sure if flash and newborns mixed so I just used natural light.

Sometimes it's just a matter of seeing it before it happens.

Getting Mom and Dad with body parts can show the size of the child.

Sometimes I like my snapshots.

The daughter of one of my dearest friends. I love the softness of the baby against the roughness of the father's hands.

Here is another one with a parent involved. This is Chad with Payton.

You have to be careful with this type of shot. She let loose on him right after this picture and it wound up looking like he's the one that lost control. :-)

Thank you all so much!!

I love getting the parents' hands in the pictures, so I was looking for creative ways to do that since Mom still has a big tummy that I don't think she wants photographed and Dad is a big guy! This little lady is 3 days old, so I am really looking forward to it. I got some snapshots of her yesterday with friends and family. She is a good alert baby...NOTHING like my babies! They didn't make great baby models!

edit to add...I will be designing their birth announcement with the shots I get!
