Post what you think is your most misunderstood or erroneously perceived challenge entry and why you think so.

NOTE: This is not a thread to complain over scores. I am just curious what you were thinking on that challenge entry that everyone else - either by score or comment or both - just seemed to 'not get' or 'see' or 'interpret how you thought was the obvious.'

Also Note: this thread should not be used to 'call out' anyone for their lack of seeing things 'your' way on a photo. I have been doing some research lately and I actually have a genuine interest in thought processes.

Forgot: I should start this off...

Just ended challenge (at the time of this posting) but was, as the updated photog comments say, kind of perplexed at how the lights were so distracting. It just led me to believe no one saw the connection between the title and the shot. Or that people weren't looking at the entries so closely. I thought it was obvious and still chuckle when I view the pic. I mean there is only one Santa looking off the mark.

Huh. I don't actually have any entries that were misunderstood.
12/31/2008 08:03:36 PM · #3
cool thread :)

This was entered into the fence challenge. Several commenters didn't see the fence and I'm pretty sure I'd have had as many if not more commenters complaining about the fence spoiling the shot in a FS

Very intense stance the cat has. Nice shot.

Just an obscure (but straightforward) reference to the challenge topic -- I think it's one of my personal favorite entries, at least in part because a couple of people were inspired to look it up ... :-)

Hehehe. I'm misunderstanding how you possibly thought that an out-of-focus fence in the background was in any way a good idea for a "fence" challenge. lol.

Quite, and thats why dpc voters are slowly putting me off staying here, the fence covers almost 50% of the image, its just sad that dpc voters are all about shiny shiny, that looks pretty images that are IN YOUR FACE.

I've learnt a lot in my time here and probably the biggest thing is not to give a toss about my score.

dpc is dead, long live dpc ;)

btw, the OOF fence is actually in the foreground, for safety ;)

For me, this is an easy call: the challenge was "Self Portrait" and the description said "Find your best side, and submit a self-portrait."

I thought about this long and hard, and decided my "best side" is my mind, and so I planned, executed and submitted this:

: "I am my work: the thorn that weeps, and holds the sky entire..."

The community, however, was (probably still is) unwilling to accept the concept of a "self portrait" that does not include a physical rendition of the artist's body. And so it goes... 65 1's, a perso0nal best :-)

R.

And it is still being misinterpreted.

ETA Oops...a bit too late.

This picture was purposefully taken for the challenge "Adulthood without Adults". I was trying to show a decaying log feeding the new, young mushroom as an analogy for the sacrifices adults make for children. Very few people got it.

I entered this one in the Upside Down III challenge and it missed the mark completely.

I guess it bothered me most because everything about this shot was intentional. I got up before sunrise, drove over an hour to the spot, composed the shot, waited for the sun to rise enough to illuminate the mill building just right and then timed it between leaves and other debris floating in the water. Even before shooting it I planned to rotate it if the reflection was good enough. That I guess was the big mistake.

I did take some comfort in this comment though…
“Shame mate, you were so obviously slaughtered by the 2 second voters! I think this is a stunning shot and that score is more an embarrassment to the voters of DPC not to you :( “

*rolls eyes*

*edit* I had to make it more clear what I was rolling my eyes at. The irony of that line when your entry is almost fully about IN YOUR FACE is a bit amusing. The fence thing beside the point, you know darn well you were trying for "ooo, pretty animal!" ;)

I would have to say that this is one of my most misunderstood challenges. The placement of the rope between the cans was setup to look like a face; one can at the ear and the other at the mouth. Not a technically great photo but I wanted the rope to stand out so the cans were a little dark. Low score but I still like the picture.

Most misunderstood for me was probably this one, in "The Road Less Traveled".

The idea of "the road less traveled" was about choices made in life and that we are always looking for some indication or sign as to which choice to make. You don't know what is on the other side of this sign, just as in life you don't know what is on the other side of a choice until you make that choice and cross to the other side of it. It was probably way too much of a metaphor, as you had to at least be passingly familiar with that book, or at least Robert Frost's "Road Not Taken". Some of the commenters understood what I was conveying, but I think the majority saw no road in the image, so little relevance to the topic.

Here is mine, not so much misunderstood but I did get a few DNMC's for this one and disagreed with them at that time and still do.

Probably this one, although I should have enough images in this category for a series. Here many didn't see the triangles, although there are thousands of them and nothing else:

...so many to pick from...but here's one at the top from the Religion challenge:

I think it required too much thought?...and it isn't tidy...and the Latin..Latin will get you every time though I was really pleased some actually took the time to look it up. Religion is much more than a building or a priest.

one of my first entries, the challenge was to take a picture that celebrates life. Well to me thats practically a free study. I thought this picture celebrated at least an aspect of life. Playing with pets that bring you joy, the voters did not agree.

Mine was the funniest and complete out of sync image :)

Not quite sure if it was misunderstood, or if people just hated it. I like to think it was misunderstood from the stand point the the "bulge" created by the fisheye wasn't clear enough.

To this day, I don't know if I was the one that "didn't get it", or if it was the voters. The challenge was Sea (not Land), and the description was, "Show us your best seascape shot from a coastal area. Open water should be the prominent feature in your image. Such land as is shown should be "framing" or "anchoring" the water." The shot was taken on a very calm, June evening, under a full moon. On a couple of other challenges I'd been getting an inordinate number of DNMC's, so I figured if I didn't put any land in a seascape, I'd be home free. WRONG... and so much for minimalism.

At any rate, it's still one of my favorite shots ever.

To change the subject completely, what is that a quotation from?

well, whether I understood it or misunderstood it, I gave it a 10. I was not unconvinced :-)
