OK, I have finally sorted out a route! Some of the places listed below we will just pass by (obviously stopping to take photos!) and others are ones we'll be able to go into. I am gaining permission from all those I need to for photography (just incase) and hopefully I won't have to make any changes to the route before the day! As stated in my original post this walk will be roughly 3 miles.

Here goes:

Start: 10.30am Liverpool Street Station

The 'Gherkin' (30 St Mary's Axe)

Lloyds Building

Leadenhall Market (Harry Potter fans will have to guess which film this place was used in!)

St Pauls Cathedral

Millennium Bridge

Globe Theatre

Hays Galleria

HMS Belfast

City Hall

End:
Tower Bridge / Tower of London

Your thoughts on the route?

I also need to mention at this point, just incase you don't know, I walk pretty slowly (ask Andi) but I am determined to walk rather than use my 'wheels' this time so you have all been warned! However, just before you all think you'll have to walk at a snails pace for the day, fear not, Andi tells me if I am struggling we might jump in a cab or on the tube for a couple of 'stops' and catch you all at a designated place!

And if it's raining....

One suggestion was visting the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition at the Natural History Museum.

The only problem with this is that it seems you can only book tickets in advance! Here's a little information on the cost of the exhibition as well:

Adult 17-59 £7.00

Adult 60+ £3.50

Student / Unemployed £3.50 (You will need to show proof of entitlement (such as NUS card or pension book) for any discounted rate ticket purchased when you arrive at the event.)

Oh and Andi, you get in free...as per bloody usual!

The only other suggestion I have if it's raining is the British Museum which I am sure we have all seen a photo or two of ;o)

Anyone else got ideas of what to do if it's raining?

The List so far:

talj
Ecce Signum
SteveJ
motherlee
bobonacus
gloda
dainmcgowan
Falc (possibly)
Matthew (possibly)

Part of Original post:

Now on to the twist...

The Walk Around the World for Brain Tumours will be held between 1 January and 1 November 2008. People are encouraged to undertake sponsored or unsponsored walks to raise awareness about brain tumours and to donate the mileage covered to the World Walk target of circling the earth three times at the Equator (75,000 miles or 120,000 kms).

We intend to make the GTG an unsponsored event so please do not worry about having to donate any money, that's not what this is about.

Every person that attends the GTG and walks the 3 mile route will have that mileage added to the World Walk target :o)

Thanks for reading :o) I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that we can get a few people interested in this :o)

Cheers

Natalya :o)

Gee I would be a very sleepy photographer that day (I'm working in the nightclub on Halloween) but I'm interested. Let me speak with the committee and I'll see if I can make it an event for our society to bring some new faces.

Cheers Gilles, it would be good to meet you again :) that said, I need to check my diary! Sounds like you've planned this well Talj :) oh, was I supposed to be route planning?

I'll see nearer the time if I can make it. It will depend on a few other factors.

Fingers crossed we'll see you there Matthew, would be great to chat to you again :o)

I've now edited the original post to exclude 'Twist 2' as I am assuming that's the reason for the lack of replies in this thread...so, now that's gone I wonder if we can create a bit more interest?

Cheers

Yes, I agree, it would be rather pleasant to meet up with Matthew again, among others.

What was the twist 2? Was it the book thing? If so, I'm not sure that that is the cause of the lack of replies. I would think that people are wary of what the good old Brit weather is likely to throw at a GTG in November.

Have you got a rough draft of the planned route yet? Would be interesting to see what you have in mind..

too early to commit at the moment.

Looks like I'm coming with the society. No idea on how many people will come along though.

I need to check airfare and the ability to take time off. I'd forgotten about this and asked for the third week in November - I'll check to see if I can switch that. But I may well try to get there again!

Apologies for not posting here for a bit! I have been away on holiday and then it looked like I would be having surgery this coming week but thats now been cancelled (again!) so the GTG is still on!

I was planning on taking in the area around the 'Gherkin'/ Lloyds Buidling and a few other places I'd like to get to include are St Paul's Cathedral, City Hall (dependent on whether they are open to the public that day) and from there I am still thinking!

I realise this isn't sounding like a very well thought out 'plan' but I've got this week to put a decent itinerary together and I'll try and bounce my ideas of you guys over the next few days :o) I'm also going to try and put together a backup plan incase the weather is really awful!

So, as we're creeping ever closer to the 1st how many of you think you might be able to make it? :o)

The List:

Ecce Signum
SteveJ
motherlee
bobonacus
gloda
dainmcgowan

Hi talj,

We will be able to make it, unless:

The credit crunch means SW trains go into liquidation.
Labour cancel all weekends!
My wages aren't paid into the bank.
Or, it rains:)) Well, more than last time.

Count me in as a definite :)

Just an idea but if the weather is really bad a backup could be the wildlife photog of the year as that opens on the 31st @ the Natural history museum

I'm still watching this - if Deb makes it across it will probably shame me into making the journey (again) :- )

I would love to come but will not be able to make it this time. But I WILL make it to another get-together there whilst on this side of the pond, I promise! You guys are just too darn much fun to not make the trip twice (or more).

I'm coming for sure now. We've announced the GTG to the society and got some people who are interested, but I won't know for sure who comes until shortly before.
