Is there any way I can update my Photoshop CS2 to open and adjust Raw files from my new Canon 40D?

I searched the downloadable updates from Adobe and it seems like you can only apply the new ACR file which would open Canon 40D RAW to CS3. Does anyone know what would happen if I inserted that file into CS2? Would it work or would it screw the whole program up?

Even though I've been a member here for almost 4 years now and have learned so much about photography, I've never shot in Raw. This weekend, I shot my first Raw photos and now I find I can't even open them in CS2.

Is there someway to update CS2? I don't really want to have to get CS3. Is the Canon software for Raw files any good? Should I get something else like Silkypix? (Spent hours on the internet trying to figure out the whole Raw picture thing and found that program.)

Any kind of help or advice would be appreciated.

You don't have to do your RAW processing in CS2. Did your camera come with "EOS Viewer Utility" software? "Digital Photographer Pro"? Both of those have perfectly decent RAW converters in them; you make your conversion, save it as a 16-bit TIFF, and open it in CS2 to finish the job.

In another forum in which I participate, folks have gotten the Adobe Camera RAW 4.3.1 update to work with CS2.

Make sure you read the instructions on that page...following the instructions for CS3 (even though you have CS2).

FYI, Canon EOS 40D is not listed as a newly supported camera in this release (4.3.1) because it was supported and listed in the previous 4.2 release, which is cummulative (included) in 4.3.1.

Finally, I use CS3 so I haven't tried this update on CS2. Please update at your own risk (make sure you have backups of your app and data).

Well, I tried doing this and it didn't work - darn. I'm going to try and see if plugging the new AcR file somewhere else in the CS2 files will work.

I am using CS2 with a 40D. My workaround is to use the Digital Photo Professional utility that came with the camera. Select the Batch Process icon. The key is to translate to an 8 bit TIF; the 16 bit file locks out many of the CS@ filters.

It really sucks that Adobe won't support CS2 for mainstream new cameras. You plunk down good money for their software and unless you run right out and upgrade every version, their attitude is screw you. Too bad they are a practical monopoly.

Yes, they did the same thing to me by locking me out of my 6 month old CS when I upgraded to a Rebel XT from a Rebel.

It stinks. I was so mad I refused to be forced to upgrade, so I never did. Still using CS.

There is another workaround however...use their free utility to convert all your RAWs to DNG. You can do that in batch mode even, after a days shoot.

CS2 should be able to open the DNGs just fine. And that future proofs you a bit. But I'd still archive the old RAWs on DVD to be safe.
