From a KID'S perspective, think how this sounds. Here's a whole bunch of "grownups" putting him down for being too smart, so it must be fake? Jaysus wept...

LOL. Even back then? :P

Yep, 1983, Q-Link (changed to AOL in 1990) was going strong for the Commodore 64 users (also Radio Shack and Apple but they kept us all seperate because we didn't play well together ;)). Lighting fast 1200 baud speeds. LOL! Oh, those were the days and I do have some stories of early real-time chat forums. :D

Amen to that.

Ditto...and some posters don't seem to realize he's actually responded himself within this thread, too much reading for them perhaps...

I'm well aware that he (or someone) joined the forum and is reading and has posted in this thread. That doesn't change my opinion. I won't say something in public behind someone's back that I wouldn't also say to their face (or their monitor). Actually, I don't see a "whole bunch" of grownups putting him down. I see a couple of us doubting the story. I do see a "whole bunch" taking the story at face value just because it was written on the internet. Hmmm, maybe it's time I dust off that ole bridge I have stashed away and see if I can sell it again. ;)

hehe!

Ouch! on the language issue.. Considering that fact that I know a lot of people who write in that manner at that age I'm surprised by the critisism.. Heck, I've been asked by teachers to dumb down fairly hastily written speeches..

I understand his criticism. If I only had a look at the professional's picture I wouldn't recognize him on the street. With the one he took, even the poorly lit version, I would immediately know him.. What's the point of having a pretty picture that makes you feel like you're looking at a stranger..

So let's take this to logical extremes. Let's make DPC absolutely THE place on the internet to run people down before we know them, and to doubt they're who they say they are when they join & participate. Let's ALL do this. Let's ALL gang up on them, not just a couple of us. It would make us so proud, that we are cynical enough to disbelieve everything we hear/see unless irrefutable evidence is shoved in our faces.

Or, maybe, let's just turn this around: even IF it should prove to be true that the whole blog is somehow a scam, as Mike is guessing it is, what have WE lost in the process if we just take it on face value? By being civil and welcoming until given reason to be otherwise, what have we lost?

this one is NOT better than the shot of the pro. he looks dorky, it's under lit. his expression is like "Uh what was that?" I'm surprised he's put the camera on a tripod and not holding it himself (you know, the stretched arms shots)

so the pro changed his eye color, probably happened whilst throwing an action over it or something (he should have noticed though)but it's way better than the snapshot he took of himself. skin smoothening....I don't use it with men, but women seem to prefer a little touching up.

I think he should've done the myspace/facebook shot, you know the one where they have a crappy point and shoot and they take a picture using the flash into a mirror so you can barely see them, really love those kinds, i think I'll do my senior portraits like that, lol.

I think my next shoot is going to simulate holding a cell phone at arm's length over the subject's head.

My sentiment exactly.

I find it funny how people can think this is a fake.

1. He doesn't call out the actual photographer.
2. He never claims to be amazing at photography.
3. The points he makes against the "proffesional" image are valid. (especially that stupid neck crease *shudder*)
4. His blog has been around since 2005.
5. Having a blog at the age of 18 that isn't covered in "omg" "lol" "icbhast (I can't believe he actually said that)" makes you a fake?. I am 22, I have always refused to use stuff like that on anything I type out. Does that mean I'm a fake too? (Honestly, is there any sort of logic being used here?)
6. In my opinion, his pic, while not being better overall than the professional image, his shot is better in almost all the aspects that he points out.

Michael, I strongly encourage you to start participating on this site. I learned so many things here. Just be warned, as proven by this thread, there are also ALOT of really dumb people on this site. You need thick skin (which I am often lacking) to take the critisism, but if you can, this site can be really helpful. Good luck with photography, it's such an amazing thing to have.

I'm glad you guys liked my writing but I used the word "ridiculous" four times! Come on! What adult would do something silly like that? ;-)

I'm actually really awful when I'm writing about stuff that doesn't matter to me. Right now I'm a freshman at MIT and I failed my Freshman Evaluation Essay so they put me in this remedial writing class with all of these people from overseas who barely spoke english...I got an A-.

Thank you all for your comments and I think I'm joining dpchallenge. Originally I was put out by the $5/month fee, but it's looking like it's worth my money.

I have to say that I'm surprised and disappointed at some of the things that have happened in this thread. It never occurred to me that this guy would be publicly called out as a liar. Had I known this I wouldn't have posted his article, and I certainly wouldn't have emailed him this link. I feel like I've invited someone over to dinner, and then some of my relatives start attacking him because he reminds them of someone they don't like!

Because I feel responsible for this, I spent a great deal of time looking at his site and another one that he linked on reddit. He's smart enough to get accepted to MIT. He's a Boy Scout for God's sake! Who the heck wears and Eagle Scout shirt and talks about being a scout for no reason?

I'm sorry that you find it hard to believe that people are smart at this age; but I was and could have very well written something like that. (Don't ask me what's happened since:P) I know for a fact that here happen to be quite a few articulate and mature young people on this site who could easily do the same.

I'm more sorry that you have a chip on your shoulder about internet liars; but I find it hard to believe that you have spent any time reading his blog (PM me and I'll be happy to send you links to his other stuff that I've tracked down). I find it all very consistent and genuine. I'm most sorry that a potential new asset to this site has probably been chased away before he even got a chance to enjoy the good parts.

Edit: Ooops, I guess I'm too slow. Thanks for sticking around Mike. I think you might really enjoy DPC!

You know, so far Mike has reminded me a lot of Konador; intelligent, articulate, level-headed, pleasant and remarkably mature for his age. How many of us, whatever our age, can resist rising to the bait the way he has?

Welcome aboard, Mike! :)
