Yeah, outsmarting the viewers in such a dnmc inspiring challenge is not the brightest thing to do...

I scored that photo really high, but I figured it was in trouble because not many people would know what it was. It fits the challenge perfectly, and is probably one of the most creative shots in the challenge.

Indeed. Too smart for the voters. I gave it an 8. It would have been higher from me with a deeper DOF.

We all know we have to force feed the voters... we all know they won't stop and look.

I'm not saying the photog was dumb, but I wouldn't expect anything more from the voters.

It did score higher than I would have expected it to, really.

Can't agree with you on this one Leroy.

While one must admit it is indeed a very nice image, it is quite conceivable that most voters have never had the opportunity to dismantle a disk, and as such could not truly relate to the image and what it represented.

The time to educate the masses is certainly not during a challenge, and sadly the photographer's image failed to resonate with the voters since they did not recognize the medium.

The comments made by routerguy, while somewhat caustic, are nonetheless very apropos.

Ray

I know what that is and if given the chance to vote it would have scored high from me. As for the DNMC I'm not going to really get in to it other than to say that every one is entitled to their opinion no mater how lets just say uninformed their opinion may be.

Yeah.......been there, done that on the outsmarting the voters. You get spanked every time. This guy didn't even get spanked hard!

Now this one got spanked......my cheeks are *still* red! LOL!!!

Challenge description said N/A for Black and White Portrait.

The thing that cracked me up was how I got comments about "Didn't meet challenge criteria" N/A, DUH!!!, and of course, my all-time favorite........didn't meet the "Spirit of the Challenge".

What f*ckin' SPIRIT???????

The challenge stated N/A!!!!!

So I learned that one the hard way.

It was a lot of fun and I got the second highest quantity of comment, only one less than my red ribbon winner......on no level is a shot that garners 69 comments a bad thing in my book.

It was a LOT of fun! I'd do it again in a heartbeat if I get the chance!

I did not vote this one but I would have been fooled, the reflection is awesome in fact it is so good I think I would have missed that it was a reflection rather than part of the disk. Nice shot, I agree it deserved better.

I did not vote this one either but probably would have DNMC’d it too. And I’ve seen the insides of hard drives several times. The ones who DNMC’d it are not the ignorant ones. Anyone expecting an apology is. Along with anyone who dismantles a hard drive outside.

Well you know what they say, opinions are like a**holes, everyone has one and it usually stinks, mine included.

Since when does it matter if photos meet challenges anyways? I can think of a few challenges where people have still voted very clear DNMC shots wayyyyy up and others who struggled to purposely meet the challenge were told that the viewer would rather see an artsy photo that DNMC than less interesting shots that do meet the challenge. It's all subjective...

Only if you expect it to work afterward, at which point anyone who does it outside of a clean-room is. For some reason, though, I doubt he cared if it continued to operate.

that depends on what is exactly the photo's subject.
if it's the read-write head, then it might have been a valid dnmc because it wasn't filling up the frame, lol

For exactly this reason, I give DNMC photos 1s or 2s. We can always praise good photos after challenge is over. There is no rush.

What's the subject?

If it is the reflective platter, then it doesn't fill the frame. If it is the center portion (the hub), it too doesn't fill the frame. If it is the drive head, well...you get it...

I'm sorry, while the word 'masses' isn't one I would have chosen, I say that it is alwaystime to educate people.

Just don't expect them to give you a high score.

PS. I would have recognised the image; might not have scored it that high though.

I gave it a 4. Had I known what it was, I would have scored it higher. However, I do not feel the need to apologize. I have not opened my HD or bothered to look inside one while outside. To expect your audience to know exactly what you have photographed is ignorant.

It goes the same with many challenges, like the religion challenge. If it wasn't Christian or Buddhist or of any major religion, it was scored low. One photo (Not done by me) was very much a religious photo and would've been recognized by many Japanese (All Japanese really) as it being religious...however it got scored very low because nobody knew what it was. The photographer took the chance (And complained after) but I said to him what I'm saying now...don't expect everyone to know what it is you're going for.

For a group of people interested in images, digital images, not to know what this is..... wow! But I'm showing my ignorance about ignorance! I gave this a 7 but I didn't have time to comment on any images in this challenge. So I gave a comment after the challenge suggesting that maybe a cracked platter might have tied the elements of the drive together and helped more people understand. While it would have ruined the simplicity of the shot for me... moving back slightly and showing more of the drive would have educated most of the DNMCers.
