Hunting around for some tips, found this not too old thread with some useful tips and tricks.

Raises the question whether this wonderful image by Bear_Music would do well in this challenge

or whether voters are expecting images to conform only to this (also very nice) style:

I think many ideas can be gained from the previous challenge.

Painting With Light II
05/30/2007 04:38:15 PM · #3
I do hope that people have a more open mind than last time, I am far from complaining (how could I with a 6.8 score and a top 10 place) but just look at the number of 1, 2 and 3 votes leads me to believe that a lot of voters didn´t believe I was painting with light with that shot.

Painting with light is much more than just having a moving light source in the picture itself, I have seen bikini photos taken at the beach after sunset using this technology that looked more like no light at all was used but only ambient lighting and indoor scenes that were "painted" to look like they were not lit by nothing but regular daylight.

I at least hope to see more creativity and that the voters don´t think that all shots have to be more in the genre of that apple, that was a nice shot so don´t get me wrong, deserved to win.

Here is a link to a guy who is really great using this lighting technology in studio photos, there are nudes in this link so not safe for work.

I was creating a response along these lines. I couldn't agree more.

Having the light source in the image isn't a requirement of Light Painting, but it seems to be the key to a high score here.

Agree with you 100%, and hope to see more of shots like your's and Bear's in the upcoming challenge. Thanks for the link ... I was hoping to spur exactly this kind of discussion, from photogs far more proficient than me in carrying this off.

I'm a bit confused about the rules, does the light source have to be moving?
05/30/2007 05:07:37 PM · #8
Here's the problem. Painting with light, when does well is not apparent. When we have challenges where a portion of the vote goes to "did you meet the challenge" (and we all know that's a big chunk of the vote), how can you decide that on an "unapparent" effect? The only way to accomplish this is to have an obvious effect (thus the majority of the Top 10 were "streaking with light" shots)...

I bet a lot of the high scores on Larus' shot were actually people thinking it was clever to "streak with light" using the aurora. They didn't even consider that a flashlight had been used to illuminate the cliff and falls.

my only landscape painted with light. this was only a test. look that the "wind effect" on the beach was well evident. image capture August 2006 in Denmark on Kattegat. used a flashlight.

Light Painting does have a feel and texture to it when done well. There will be a bit of uneveness, hot spots, dark spots, vignetting, etc. I liken it to a movie subject lit by a flickering candle light, except it is captured in a still photograph. Plus the light will not have an obvious source angle since the light will be coming from all directions. This is far more subtle than light streaks, but it is closer to what I think of when I think of Light Painting.

My entry will probably be along the more subtle lines, although I might try a few of the streaky variety. I am sure my score will suffer next to the flashier images, but hey, I gotta keep my street cred, right?

Or maybe I'll just enter the Why challenge. ;-)

yes and you can use the title "why I entry in this challenge?" but I am sure that will be a lot of photos with that title :)

With painting with light do you actually have to move your light source around or does your subject just have to be lit using something like a torch?

well i agree that people have to be creative and open minded, but there is some people who deliberately choose not to follow the challenge theme and that is annoying as well

Are you sure? Sure enough to lower your vote? If you have doubts, I urge you to sit back and look at the photo for just a handful of seconds and "read" the light in the shot to see if anyone was illuminating a just part of the photo.

Not sure what you mean when you say people deliberately choose not to follow the challenge, but if you are expecting to see light trails or the light source in every image, you may need to examine your understanding of Painting with Light. As Larus contends, light painting need not be that obvious. In fact, light painting is more about creating a mood than it is being obvious that a moving light source was used. Of course, this is DPC and subtlety isn't always well rewarded.

As always, Just MHO

well what i mean is there is bunch of photos that, flash or long shutter speed required to get proper exposure is replaced with flash light evenly illuminating the subject.

i.e. [link removed] the only thing you can tell about this photo is that stone is illuminated now i am assuming flashlight or other non stationary light source was used but imo looks same as if regular flash would have been used.

cheers

So far (after about 50%)

this sort of image

has been done far, far, far too much and for little positive effect, does everyone own a red/white pointer?

And Im getting DNMC comments because its more subtle painting which is what we wolud use more in 'real life anyway'

Anyway a little vent

I'd wager at least 50% of people have one on their keychain if not more.
