well just finished looking at the pictures and a bit disapointed 266 photos and at least half blury poorly exposed and or composed. now the other half theres lots of nice photos but lots of them are repeating.

it is funny that there is probably 20+ [deleted]. and then there is [deleted] - exactly like the one that was winner couple weeks ago. i just hope it is not by same person because thats not creative enough.

and last group of photos [deleted] there is actually lots of nice ones but i think you get tired of looking in all of them

tell me what did you think

Every challenge has it's standard themes, but yes, the night shots has more than it's share. And pretty much everyone in the challenge probably thought about doing a city scape reflected in water, and a driving-at-warp-speed shot. :) The repeating ideas are 10 times as bad if you've just submitted your own shot, and it fits in to the most popular theme.

But, a part of learning photography is learning to copy what you've seen other people do, and I have no problem with people entering challenges on this basis. There will be lots of bad copies, but also some good copies, where people perfect the process of that type of shot. Everyone else gets to identify the difference and hopefully people are learning and improving their photography along the way.

Although I agree that I hate to see almost direct copies of photos entered a week or two later into another challenge.

imagine, that you've got everything you want for a perfect night shot. What will be included?
Mine, maybe would have had damp summer night, fireflies and a lamp... :)

Um, exactly what were you expecting to see in a night shot challenge? Sunshine and butterflies?

lol @ Amy :)

I for one am extremely disappointed in the photos.... not a single one taken inside a strip club or house of ill repute.

Here is a shot I wish I could have entered. It's from my imbed with the U.S. Marines 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit. I just finished the project today and it was amazing. I had a blast on board the USS Bonhomme and I was treated like royalty...well actually I had the rank of 2 Colonels, 3 Majors several Lieutenants and a score of senior enlisted. So if I wanted something or to do something it happened. Much appreciation to the Marines and Navy for putting up with me.

Have you seen the bicycle challenge? Every single photo is of a bike. Can't you find something else, people? :)

I tried taking a photo at night with no lights in it, but it just came out black. Maybe I should try raw mode? :)

I tried. The police said I can have my camera back next week.

My entry in Nightshots IV is faring very poorly.
It's around 3.5 right now with 15 votes cast. Yeah, I know it's early
but I am very disappointed because I projected a score in the low
fives for it. Or at least high fours, like 4.7 or 4.8

[removed content that uniquely identified a challenge entry]

Yawn.

Someone actually made a comment that I shouldn't have
used flash for my Night shot IV entry. What a great idea! I"ll
just submit a photo where you can't see a freakin thing! That
would really score well.

Sigh. Oh well back to the drawing board.

looking through the submits I found only a few interiors at all, but a night shot does not strictly mean a shot taken outside, doesn't it?

cheers,

well... trying to make myself clear :)

edit: corresponding to technoShroom's posting, that there isn't a single pic of a strip club etc...
...I was just wondering, why the majority seems to think of "night shot" as a shot taken outside (the challenge details say nothing about in/outside shots only).

Mine is running exactly where I thought it would, but I had seriously considered changing it at the last minute last to one of my portrate ones...I didn't because it's inside and I figured I'd get bashed for not having an obvious "Night".

I have voted on the night shots. There are some really great shots and a lot of medioca ones. Mine included in the later. First go at a night shot. Learned a lot. It would have been nice to see more people think outside of the square rather than doing a standard night shot that they are either familiar or comfortable with. At least I tried. One of the previous Posts discusses someone's photo, thought that was a no-no. Shouldn't it be taken off the thread?

I've never given so many 4's.

i agree with most of the posts here. and bicycle comment was very funny.

the main problem i see that most people (in some cases me included) will go through photos quick and night cityscape looks like night cityscape. however sometimes because of that better shots stay with mediocre ones as at a glance they look similar, but if you look closer one of them might be a bit blurry or poorly exposed. and last thing 640px limit does not do justice to nice ***scape photos.

Also lets remember this is also a basic editing challenge, this was also my first time shooting a night shot, and even though mine is a bit overexposed in some areas, it could really be fixed to well do to the basic rules.

I agree. My shot isn't at all what I had hopped to accomplish when the challenge was first announced and the score reflects it.

I'll never quite understand the need to make sweeping generalizations about challenge entries sucking. What's the purpose?

1. Trying to make people feel bad for playing a game
2. Trying to get everyone to vote low as to agree with you're opinion
3. Trying to say your shot is better than everyone elses before the results are in

Have I missed one?

4. Having the opinion that the majority of the entries sucked and an overwhelming need to share.

so the challenge is night. what better way to represent night than lights out of nighttime darkness. What better way to do that than with cityscapes. Yes there are other ways, but I feel cityscape is the "standard" to some people.
