Same here, and it's my own darn fault. I'm barely clinging to a 6, but I'm gonna tie a knot in it so it doesn't fall any more. :-/

Wish I could do that, but my score is my own fault. I failed the image and there is no one to blame but myself. Some day I will learn to treat the image better.

In my view a score of 5.5 is in the mid "F" evaluative level. That is NOT good.

Not suggesting that DPCers generally rate images in the relative order they deserve, they usually do, but they just give pathetic ovarall ratings to ALL images. That is the way it has been since the site started. As long as DPCers chose to rate images the same as everyone else, scores will continue to be low.

I think it is hard to score high on DPC...that is why it is interesting to submit, that being said a 5.5 is middle ground, a photo that probally has flaws...but has it's merits also...seems to me people strive for the best photo they can submit, using the parameters of the individual Challenge at hand...some hit and some miss...a goal I have had for the last year was to get my average up to 5.5...if that is an "F"..I'm barking up the wrong tree...lol...and with Steves average at a 5.7778...maybe he is better than a "D" or a "C" Photographer...and we all know that he is...so I will continue submitting and seeing what individual scores I can receive try to stay out of the "4"s... reach for "6"s..and maybe who knows...get an occasional "7"...to me it'a all in Fun...to compete against some pretty good talent world wide here on DPC.
Thanks for letting me say a few words.. :)... Tom

I totally agree and this sound exactly like my philosophy on DPC. Though I am still waiting for anything to finish in the 6's :)

When I started visiting DPC I had no idea what I was doing..and believe me I still really don't have a clue...lol... but if you go back to the beginning..I am sure there has been improvement...I shoot for the fun and competition.. I have no aspirations of being a professional photographer or even making any kind of money doing it...it is just a hobby, you will reach the "6"s... I have no doubt about that..you gotta remember that it is all in fun..and not to take anything said too seriously..I have in the past, and have learned from that...I just know one day I will be competent with a camera in my hand, and a few nice pictures to share.

Not suggesting that a desire to improve your average to 5.5 is a mediocre goal, the goal itself is good but the actual value of 5.5 is inconsistent with the view. Your goal is good, the fact we have to think as 5.5 as meeting it is what is wrong... DPC scoring mentality is wrong, not your goal. That is my point.

I feel that an average score of 5.7 is still in the "F" level evaluative, just like yours, everywhere else in my world's experience that is true EXCEPT DPC. That implies to me that DPC scoring thinking is what is wrong, not that the images are.

You are a good photographer, so am I. Your scores, however, do not support that view. Your actual scores (And mine) indicate you are lousy. That is what bugs me.

For me photography is an hobby and my philosophy on dpc is to improve my photography techniques. sometimes I have great surprices that very good shots have low ratings. I think that there are many reasons for this. first the troll (sometimes very great shots have some 1 or 2 that I can't understand ad example: ). second sometimes there are too photograph or the subject is boring, after 100 photographs with the same subject the users are boring and rate with low rating. third, how many photographers with a very good photographic capabilities there are on dpc? and how many DPC users see the photographs with real critique capabilities? I think that the minimal editing was a good feedback for the true capabilities. Advanced or expert editing are great photoshop exercises, very helpful for this work, but photoshop exercises.
For me there are other problems, the language, the different culture and sometimes is difficult understand some shots that probably are very humorous. Last thought, the DPCers prefer photographs with great subject and great saturation if a photograph haven't these two properties have always low rating.

I have submitted on other sites..and it seems I am a "better talent"...due to the scores..now I know the truth...and some photo's are good, some are bad...some are well thought out, some are quick submissions..and NOT thought out....if I stay at DPC..(and I really do)..I accept all the bullsh*t...the good, the bad, the "1"s , the "2"s..so if it is harder to score here I figure if I play the game and really do my homework..I can learn here...and it is a fun way to learn...the mentality of DPC voters is besides the point..they like it or they don't, what I am learning is what is important...now you are different.. you have the knowledge and you pass it on..and I can see that you are tops on this site.

I guess the scores mean nothing, they are just used to create a field of play...I know...compared to other site(s)...it seems DPC's score is lower...I have so much to learn..and what I have is NO time to put foward..to actually make this experience at DPC anything more than a wholesome hobby, and it is fun to interact with professionals and amatuers alike...it sometimes bugs me that DPC is the way it is...But...I actually think it is the best we have (in my experience)

"The Majority Rules"....if a great photo finishes with a "7"...the low votes don't matter..toss them to the curb...it's an opinion..at the most...alot of times it is "other" things, there are alot of Photogs here that we can learn from, and alot of them will help...I wish I had their talent....even if I had their knowledge...I could turn it into something
Also.. I find it really neat that this site is world wide...the opportunity to compete against the world is amazing...we live in a very good time...communication is very good, brings people of all backgrounds together..
as for the type of PIC on DPC..seems you have a point... but it is all in the viewers eyes..and if you can grab ONE person with your thoughts and ideas through a photo..you have succeeded.

"the opportunity to compete against the world is amazing" this is the true reason because I like DPC. the comparition with other people in the world is amazing. there are others photography web site but in that sites every "trash" is a great photo in the comments..... and you "must" write that every "trash" is the centuries photograph ....... obviously because are all artists.........

Agreed that DPC is better than other sites evaluating images but that does not mean it defines the standard. Individual voters do that. If we vote like everyone else at DPC then we must accept the scoring standards. Most do, I don't. I have very high standards myself but just disagree with DPC scoring in general. I vote different (higher) from others and make no appologies for that. You WANT me to vote on your images. If it is good(And most are) I will generally score higher than the average. But if it is crappy, I'll vote it lower than average. I use the whole scale. LOL!!!

I have to admit, I don't use the whole scale. If I like the PIC...above 6..if I don't and it doesn't meet criteria... 4

I have to admit that my Avg Vote Cast is 4.3686. this because in the first challenges on dpc my rates was very low except that for the best photo in in the contests. Now my criteria are changed(i think). It's's very rear that there aren't 10 in my evaluations. well for me is 1 a photograph very small or dnmc. 4 if i don't like the composition, 5 is a photograph that meet the contest but isn't a great photo. 6,7 a photograph that I like. 8 a very good photo. 9 a great photograph with only a small problem that i liken't. 10 a great photograph. unfortunately sometimes my evaluations aren't in average and sometimes I have some low rating(4/5) for photographs that have 6 or 7.......

everybody has there own way of voting...the final number is an average of all those ways, what I see GOOD, others could see as SH*T, for whatever reason they can think of....it is just a number to measure the field. By the way... I hardly ever post a score in these threads, so I guess I will, remember this is a scoring thread...lol

I used to vote like everyone else... average 5.3 or so by design because I wanted to see if I could guess the average vote of the group just to know I understood what is good and what is not by DPC standards. Now I've changed... I vote different, higher, but my overall average is still VERY low. I'm not proud of that but it is slowly inching upward. :)

When I vote, mentally I alway start at 5 and goes up or down or stays the same as appropriate IMV.

This challenge is weird, the # of views to votes...not complaining.

Could be a three way battle for bragging rites but no ribbons involved so tough to get really excited. ;)

Just finish voting and commented on several. Good luck to everyone. Just remember if your score just went up you can thank me by sending money to my paypal account. If your score went down then blame Langdon.

In my latter day voting strategy I start at 7 ("C" level by my thinking)as an average and go up or down from there. I find there is plenty of room at the top for the best images to get a deserving score and plenty of room at the bottom to rate the really bad ones. :)
