This is a very exciting challenge for me! I am both a Reiki practitioner and a Reflexologist. I also work with crystals and gemstones, herbs, nutrional healing, and some aromatherapy.

Anyone else excited?!!?

I'm about as unexcited as you are excited. It's going to be quite hard for me to disentangle personal opinions in this challenge and I think I'm just going to steer clear and let y'all have your fun.

Me too! Well, not as pedegree'd as you, but I certainly have my own practices. Gonna be pretty weird, but it'll be fun! My poor partner had to suffer all my excited babbling last night....

Likewise! I was thinking of submitting a completely white shot to indicate emptiness... but I guess that I ought to steer clear too.

So this is going to be an all GIRLS challenge?

I am a practicing herbalist based on Native American medicine, so I am ecstatic that this one came along. Now to try to come up with an image that conveys this. I will be working on this a bit hard, but I already have about 10 ideas.

It may end up largely female based, only because women are much more in tune with the natural rhythms of the earth, as well as many of its secrets.

Same here, my first instinct was to go take a picture of a duck. Unfortunately (or fortunately for the challenge) it's currently a little cold for ducks where I live. I do have a few more legitimate ideas, and this one might end up being the first challenge I actually get around to entering, assuming I can find time to work on it.

same here, though if I do decide to enter I guess I can go next door to my neighbors house, she is very into alternative medicine and even has lot of very large crystals sitting around in the yard.

I think I am just going to enter the RED challenge instead.

Yeah! I like the challenge! I'm gonna make my shot tonight, I so hope it comes out how I want it. And that people get it :-D

I'm all entered, and I'm a guy, and I have no sort of association with any sort of alternative medicine. On the contrary, I'm in law enforcement! But I think I have a great shot this time around (no pun intended). Can't wait for you guys to start giving me feedback... stay tuned!

As a former paramedic, I'll stick to the red challenge.

As a trained engineer, practising systems architect and bit of a geek I have been a little surprised at the negativity shown towards alternative medicine in this thread. With my wife having suffered through many ailments that were not effectively dealt with by "conventional" (now there is a misnomer! :-) medicine but dealt with effectively by "alternative" (or maybe just "stuff that has been around longer"?) medicine I guess I have more of a personal interest than most.

Great challenge, none the less :-)

With the amount of people entered so far, I may just have a shot... ha!

I am excited, this may just be the challenge that gets me back into DPC.
Have not been motivated lately, but this one has got me thinking of ideas.

Hopefully voters will be kind, good luck to all

I turned in my photo the day before yesterday, and also wrote to the SC to ask them if they could have a look at it to see if it was within the rules. haven't gotten an anwser back from them so I'm guessing it is...

I have to wonder at that myself. As a practitioner, I would never advise a client NOT to seek conventional medicinal help. The role of a holistic practitioner is to support that of doctors and to work in conjunction with other treatments. I am not hokie enough to say that I can cure anything just with Reiki or Reflexology, but I can certainly help people to feel better and healthier.

You can't tell me that improving one's circulation, relieving stress, stimulating your body's natural functions, and improving one's nutritional habits can be bad for you.

One of the reasons I got into the natural health field was because any time I went to the doctor, they'd look at me for about 30 seconds and 30 seconds after that I'd walk out with a prescriton. Well, I'm sorry, but I don't agree with popping pills just for the hell of it. Most antibiotics, for instance, are prescribed for viral infections, which they simply don't affect.

I will say Brielle that you have hit the strength of alternative medicine. The benefit comes from basically spending time with the patient; "hand holding" if you will. Putting patients in a better frame of mind is very likely to help them with their problems. It is certainly not going to cure cancer or asthma, but it can help with aches and pains and the various minor ailments we tend to just suffer with.

A lot of people don't realize that when treating ailments, its not just the physical that needs to be cared for. Hence the term holistic. It comprises the mind, body, and spirit. People's attitudes actually do physically affect their abilities to heal and be well. If you are depressed, angry, and feel hopeless, you are much less likely to recover (or at least not as quickly) as someone with a very positive, optimistic outlook.

I. for one generally go to "conventional" doctors, but I am open to and indeed, a supporter of alternative types of treatment. Twenty years ago, my brother who was an MD, sought acupuncture for conditions he suffered with, and swore by it. Not that long ago, chiropractors were regarded as "quacks", and now most insurance companies cover their treatments.
Funny story though - A few years ago, my mother, who was in hospice care in my home, was seen by a hospice nurse who was a practitioner of "healing touch". She told my mother, who was definitely not a believer, that she would help her relax, and spent some time moving her hands slowly up and back above my mother's body, as my mother slowly drifted off to sleep. The nurse was pleased that her treatment had helped, and left happily. After the door closed, my mom sat up and said, "Sometimes you just have to go along with it, so you don't hurt their feelings." Well...it was funny to me, anyway.

I do believe in healing touch. Think of a mother's hand on your forehead when you were sick. If that's not healing touch, what is? Just wish I knew how to photograph that energy field.

I'll caution you that insurance companies don't really care if a treatment works or not. They care that a treatment modality costs them less money and gives them the impression of offering "value" for their premiums.
