Hi All,

I would like to start a discussion about Lightroom 1.0 -

What do you like?
What do you dislike?

I like that it is much less of a drag on my system.
I like the clone and heal tools that were added.

I haven't done enough to say what I think is lacking but that will come soon.

What about the rest of the DPC community?

I was really skeptical about the program when it was in beta but I love the release version.

V1.0 is much improved, over the beta.

I never found either version to be slow, by v1 is faster.
I really like the clone/heal tools.
Love, love, love the 'on image' colour adjustment
Stacking is cool - now when I open stuff in PS it doesn't spam the folder (or at least it is controlled)

What's bad:
colour management support is crappy.
Printing/ profiling/ soft proofing support is crappy.

I really like the on image adjustment as well. That was so cool when trying it out on a test photo.

I agree that v1 seems a lot better than the beta.

The inability to compare photos at 1:1 was a huge problem with the beta. I like the new "compare" view functionality (although I find it a little distressing that clicking on the image size shortcuts in the "Navigator" pane take you out of the compare mode), and the way they retained the old functionality as "survey".

Stacking is a very welcome addition, but I've seen some strange problems with it:

a) Sometimes when I create a stack from a row of consecutive photos (when sorting by "taken time") it appears at the bottom of the grid rather than staying in place.

b) Related to that, sometimes when I expand a stack the extra photos appear at the bottom of the grid rather than next to the one I expanded

c) If you click on a keyword to pull up all images with that keyword then stacks are ignored and you see all the individual pictures.

Also I find it a bit irritating that if you go from "Develop" back into the loupe view of "Library" you can't set the rating on the photo.

So all in all it's much better, and I'm happy that I'll be able to use it to manage my photos, but I think there are still some rough edges to be polished. Here's hoping for 1.1 in a few months time...

I regularly use several raw converters (RSP has been my default "get it down quick" converter), Lightroom (beta up until now), and DxO for anything that I plan to print really large because I consider the quality of the output from DxO to be much higher than the others.

One thing that I really appreciate about Lightroom is the Tone Curve implementation. All the others (including PhotoShop) have curves. But I just usually feel like a "Bull in a China Shop" when it comes to curves. I use it. But don't feel like I have much "finesse". Well, that's where I think Lightroom's implementation is way ahead of everyone else. I really like how I can adjust a separate slighter for Highlights, Lights, Darks and Shadows and have IT control my curves. Maybe it's because, in art, I could never draw a straight line (or a nice curve for that matter), but sliders just make tons of sense to me. :-)

Combine the LR's tone curve with the Exposure, Recovery, Fill Light and Blacks settings and suddenly you have a VERY powerful system for controlling the rendering of your raw data. I love it!

Wait until you try just clicking on the colour/tone in the image and dragging it where you want it to go. No indirect sliders or selections needed. I loved it, when combined with a graphics tablet.

I have just received my invite for a free download as an RSP owner.

The best news:

"Adobe is currently finalizing a standalone utility to convert
RawShooter Premium settings to visually similar Lightroom 1.0
adjustments. Please visit [x] on March 5th, 2007 for further details."

Fantastic!!

Yup, received mine as well. I had already been running it (trial version) and unfortunately my conclusion is that my 'pooter needs more mojo. Not that it's any slouch, but 1GB of RAM just doesn't seem to cut it with both Lightroom and CS3 open.

I know Lightroom is better than Bridge but is it better than CS3's new camera raw converter? I've been using that which also has the split toning, fill light, recovery, etc. Are there other features not in that converter that is available in Lightroom?

That's what I'm thinking, PS CS3 may be a better upgrade as a package.

The upgrade is free for me because of my purchase of RSP (I got my email today for the serial number!). But I wonder if they will give me a better discount for CS3 if I show that I own Lightroom?

probably not seeing as they gave lightroom to you ;}

i haven't looked at that download site, but wonder if v1.0 includes future patch updates, free up until v2.0?

it does say in the email to backup the download - as you'll not be able to download it again...

The email sais that the URL supplied is valid for one download and to please save and backup a copy of this application upon download.

But since you can download the application for 30day trials I'm not sure why this would be a problem (although I am downloading and saving).

Yes, mine tried to update the database from the beta which never really worked for me, and then it just kind of sat there, waiting for more RAM.

I don't know what I was thinking three years ago buying a high end dual processor machine with only one GB of RAM. And worse, letting Dell populate the 4 memory slots with 256 MB modules so I can't easily upgrade without losing memory.

My next computer--very soon--will have 4 GB. Hopefully, that's enough for it. ;)

I certainly like what LR is capable of but never liked the library management side of it. I tend to do it manually anyways as part of my workflow so it never really got used, but I have to wonder at what point it will become part of the Adobe Suite!

Still, nice price for the intro for sure! I'm still tempted...

Did anyone do the RSP license download yet? Is that version any different than the trial? Do they give you a new license key during download?

I'm just trying to understand it before I go do it. I can't fathom why they would say "this is only good for one download" if the download is the same as the trial version.

Anyone understand that?

I've used the serial number for the free trial I downloaded to my desktop and for the version downloaded to my laptop via the email. Worked for both so I'm not sure if there is a difference???

The RSP download is a full version, unlimited. I just figured the key is generated at download, and so your code won't work if you download the thing twice. Burn a CD, write the key on the CD, and you're safe, no?

Anyhow: It's a wildly better programme than it was in Beta. I almost like it. The interface is much better than is RSP, and once you've got an idea of the keyboard shortcuts it's pretty fast.

I might even use the keywording facility - I like the hot-key feature, where you can assign words to keyboard letters and just add them to images with a key-stroke whilst browsing.

I like the customisable background features. The processing isn't quite as intuitive as RSP, but it basically does all the same stuff, plus you can filter your desaturation, which helps occasionally - not that simple desaturation has ever really been an issue to me.

Deleting files when first viewing a shoot isn't as easy as with RSP - I really like that part of that old programme, and Lightroom makes you jump through a few hoops to delete stuff - and has the confusion common to all DAM progs of the diffeence between removal from the 'library' opr removal from the system.

A couple of things I really love: when you rotate a file, it automatically draws the crop marks to the largest available frame - they're still moveable, but how often is that where you want to start? And when rotating, a grid appears automatically, which is also most useful.

I've not found it too memory intensive at all. The Betas really struggled on my system, but this release is just fine. That's on 1.7GHz 1Gb RAM laptop, 1680x1050 screen.

My one bugbear so far is printing. I like the workflow thing, I like the pdf slideshow creator, I like the web-page generator, the contact-sheet generator; but everything I've printed so far has been really dark, and I can't find a solution for it.

Overall, so far: I was worried when Pixmantec sold out, and really hated the Beta of this. I don't like Adobe as an organisation - the money they're charging for this remains stupid, both proctically and morally to my mind. It'll just get pirated left right and centre, as does PS. If they sold it for half the price, so many more people would buy it they'd make even more money - but despite my dislike of the company, I have to say they've achieved what almost works as a stand alone digital darkroom (and you can even turn the lights out). If only I get things to print properly wqithout having to take them through PS ...

I think lightroom is the best thing since sliced bread! There will be some adjustments as to how I archive my images but that's so minor compared to everything else! The HISTORY is kept forever! Just that's worth $199. The quick 100% zoom, the detailed curves adjustments that was already mentioned, stacking, auto sync, cloning and healing, and the whole tag system. I'm in heaven! :-D

the last two posts have convinced me to give it try. with a system the same as e301 it sounds like it won't bog me down - which was one concern i had...

Thanks for all who answered my question. I might clarify a bit for RSP users who have not downloaded yet.

1) When you click on the link, your serial number is generated. You need to write that down! (You can copy/paste it to notepad or your PIM so you don't make any mistakes.) Also, you should print that page and keep the print as your receipt.

2) The next step is to download. I downloaded it and confirmed by binary compare that, at least for Windows, this is EXACTLY the same file you may have already downloaded if you downloaded the 1.0 trial version.
So if you already downloaded the 1.0 trial (not the beta), you don't need to do the download. They are the same. More importantly, if you've already installed the 1.0 trial version, there's no need to reinstall. You should be able to enter your license key.
