Does the whole image need to be black and white? If the majority of it is black and white with a small part in color, will I be disqualified?
01/06/2007 10:44:49 PM · #2
It won't be DQ'ed...but it might receive low votes from some of the voters.

Judi is right... not meeting the challenge criteria is not grounds for disqualification, but you're gonna get slammed by voters.

From a voters' point of view - The challenge is Black & White Portrait - not Black & White and Blue.... or red or anything else...... so leaving a touch of color will likely not score well with voters like me.

Don't dare take what the voters think too seriously. Just look around at the votes on some very good work. Always some 2,3,and 4's defies explanation. Photography (good photography) cannot be imprisoned in a concrete box!! Do what feels and looks good and let the people still in their concrete stage vote you down. There are plenty of us who think (and live) outside the box and will appreciate your effort (speaking of being stuck in stages I guess I'm still in my rebelious stage.
No hate mail please, I am married to a type A and love her and all type A people ;>

I wonder how folks would vote for a non human portrait?

I actually looked it up in the dictionary to try and find a loophole but alas none. I will ,however, give you a 9 without even seeing your pic

A non human portrait got third place in the original black and white portrait challenge.

I was trying to search for the original black and white portrait challenge, but it seems there is no way i could search it.
If there is a way to do it, its not clearly visible to people.

Could someone put the link to the original black and white portrait challenge.

Not to knock the images from that first challenge, but the bar has been raised a lot higher since then and the voters are a lot more picky.. A non-human portrait may not go down terribly well with voters. (especially so soon after the pet portrait challenge).

The "find" method isn't working for me (changes to IE, I wonder?) so I just started at the bottom of the list in Challenge History and worked up 'til I saw it.

You can now sort the list - ascending or descending. The find command stopped working for me also.

The only issue with a non-human portrait that I can think of is that we've recently had pet portrait, and people will probably be sick of them.

For some reason with IE7 I find that I have to click "search previous" instead of "search next" for some reason. It's a bit rubbish. I think we should be able to search by challenge title anyway, from the web page.

The last "Black & White" challenge photo I entered was slammed by some because it had a slight reddish tint to it (reddish sepia if you will). Now, Sepia toned photographs are Black & White to me, but to some of the folks here who obviously take challenges too literally, it wasn't.

Not to highjack the thread, but is it ok to take the photo in color and convert to B&W in photoshop?

Thanks
Rich

For some cameras it's the ONLY way to get B&W. Many Nikon model don't have B&W settings for example.

Sepia is considered a form of Black and White.
