I have been looking to get a dSLR and have narrowed it down to a Canon Rebel or Olympus Evolt 500. I like both cameras but I just can't decide.

Anyone got any advise to offer??

so grateful

Canon frequently does rebates on bodies and lenses... might sway the decision....

don't know about the olympus but if you plan to upgrade more in the future, I would go whit the cannon- your lenses will be interchangable.

That's the thing...look into lens prices and variety, depending on what you want to shoot, and where you want to go in the future.

Depends on what kind of shooting you want to do, your budget, and how it feels to you.

dpreview.com's write up of the newer Evolt 330 speaks quite highly of the 500; and I really like the direction Oly is going with their 4/3 lenses despite their kinda heavy price tags. People say the SonicWave filter works well to address an issue Canon hasn't tackled yet.

If you have narrowed it down to two, it's time to go to a camera store and get "hands on". Even if you're going to buy online to get a better price, go and see how they feel.

When you say Rebel, do you mean the current 350XT or the original 300D (used)? If the former, it's a very good choice. If the latter, It's not one I recommend, simply because the lack of manual control over some modes, and the lack of some features stifles creativity and learning a bit.
Remeber that when you are choosing a body, you are also locking yourself into a lens system. Make sure that you plan for additional lens purchases, and do some basic research on what's available for the cameras, and in what price range.

I strongly second dpdave.
Look into the lens system and what all kinds are available and pricing.
A not to good body on a good lens is better than a good body on a not so good lens IMHO

As a Oly 500 owner I would obviously say get the Oly but....

You do need to look at the lenses, at present you can only really get the Zuiko and they are way way expensive, Sigma have a good range coming out later this year which will be sensibly priced. If you can wait taht is.

I preferred the look & feel and the features are really cool (i will learn how to use them some day:-) In short I just preferred the Oly over the Canon or Nikon and I haven't regretted my choice.

The 4/3 system means that you get a bit more zoom for your money, a Sigma 300mm becomes a 600mm on an Oly, check out the site. Also the Oly has a CCD not a CMOS, I have heard this is a bit like Plasma vs LCD TV's, LCD may be the future but currently don't beat the contrast of a Plasma (digressing). Most astro photographers will stick with a CCD because they seem to handle long exposures better, less noise and better white balance (i don't know myself).

To cut a long post short my advise would be to go & have a play, which feels better, weight, controls yada yada yada.

hope this helps a bit

I'd definatly go with dpdave, and also if your looking to buy before mid july, Canon has a 100$$ Mail-in Rebate going on. Also check your fliers because currently Futureshop has the XT on for $999.99 with a 2gig compactflash (140$ value) included.
Go With the XT ;-)
