and now, thanks to the popularity of the interview feature from the head to head suck challenge, I will now be posting interviews with Team Suck members, including myself! But first, let's hear from pidge:

Why do you insist on taking photographs?

So I can blackmail people later

What name do you call your camera?

On a good day: Baby
On a bad day: Worthless Piece of Crap

What is the secret of your suckiness?

If you aim low, anything good that happens is a bonus. Still waiting for the bonus…

What was the best photograph you never took because you screwed it up, forgot your camera, left on the lenscap, etc.?

Tons because I don’t always have my camera on… The perfect DPC ribbon shot… happened so many times I can’t even remember for what challenge

What is your favorite lens and why?

My Canon 80-200 2.8. Because it looks as impressive as those white Canon lens, but it’s not white. It also happens to take great shots and the 2.8 comes in handy with all the low lighting stuff I shoot

Would you still enter challenges if there were only comments and no scoring?

I suppose so. I am sure most of the comments would be the one word acronyms, like DNMC or OOF

On a 1-10 scale, how aggressive is your competitive nature?

pi

Define tongue-in-cheek:

The gesture many guys wish a hot girl would make when they look at her

What is the dominant 'mood' conveyed by your favorite photos and why do you think this is?

I like the pictures that tell a story somehow. Doesn’t have to be a Tolstoy novel, but I like ones that speak to you. They go beyond the ‘snapshot.’ That isn’t really a mood, but that’s all I can answer, really

What activities besides photography help you vent your creative urges?

Ranting and raving as I read the morning paper, ranting and raving at people who block the elevator doors as you try and exit, ranting and raving at people who stand side by side on the escalator so you can’t pass, ranting and raving at all the inequalities in the world, ranting and raving at people who make rude gestures and leers because they don’t (or do) like the way you look, ranting and raving at insane drivers who run red lights, ranting and raving at pedestrians who don’t look both ways and then jaywalk and then bang the car because they think they have right of way even though they don’t, ranting and raving at bicyclists who plough you down on the sidewalk even though they are suppose to be biking on the street, ranting and rav – oops, what was the question?

Who's yo daddy?

For me to know and you to not know.

If you had to choose, would you rather be a wine glass, a flower, or a water droplet? Why?

A wine glass(with wine in it!) because people would put their mouth all over me, and then sit back and discuss my nose, my legs, and my tannins

What person in your life is most supportive and positive about your photography habit and how do you thank them?

My boyfriend, and I’m not telling you how I thank him

Is life more like Stilton, Brie or Horseradish Cheddar? Why?

It’s like a mash of all three spread on a fresh baked baguette because life is all about variety and not denying yourself anything

What is the most ridiculous extent you have gone to a Challenge entry?

Uhm, probably walking 15 minutes in the freezing cold on icy sidewalks to get my Citylife shot. I fell on my butt on the way back and it really hurt!

Do you delete the digital photos you won't use?

No. I’m a packrat

If you had to say that photography was EITHER art or science, which would it be and why?

Art, because then I can say nobody understands me because I am the epitome of fine art and nobody ‘gets’ me

Have you ever pressed the shutter with a part of your body that was not your finger? Describe.

As much as I would like to say yes, the truth is no, I haven’t used anything other than my finger (yet)

What one thing could make you a better photographer?

Patience

What subject have you stopped photographing simply because it won't score well on dpc?

My stuff doesn’t score well on DPC? *doh* no wonder! Ask me in a few months

You are selling a book of your photography. Your name is not on the cover. What will you title it so that people will know what to expect, and still be inspired to open it?

Ice, Theatre, Duckies, Land and Portraits: Everything You Don’t Want to Look At

What person in your life is most supportive and positive about your photography habit and how do you thank them?

My Husband, he takes me on drives even though he knows im going to take pictures the whole time. I thank him every day by keeping him satisfied.

Is life more like Stilton, Brie or Horseradish Cheddar? Why?

Probably Horshradish Cheddar, because its the only one i understand.

What is the most ridiculous extent you have gone to a Challenge entry?

Taking hundreds of awful pictures of myself that never turn out, swearing to never do that again and doing it anyway for the next challenge.

Do you delete the digital photos you won't use?

Yes, but it hurts and only the really bad ones

If you had to say that photography was EITHER art or science, which would it be and why?

Art, its an expression of myself, i hope the science part comes later.

Have you ever pressed the shutter with a part of your body that was not your finger? Describe.

My toe for a self portrait but it didnt turn out

What one thing could make you a better photographer?

A better understanding of composition, leading lines, elements etc.

What subject have you stopped photographing simply because it won't score well on dpc?

i tried to stop photographing clouds but im just drawn to them so i probably will never stop.

You are selling a book of your photography. Your name is not on the cover. What will you title it so that people will know what to expect, and still be inspired to open it?

Team Suck interview with tmhalling

Why do you insist on taking photographs?

I enjoy public humiliation.

What name do you call your camera?

It depends on what mood I am in and how poor my photo scored.

What is the secret of your suckiness?

Before I shoot I think what has been done a million times before and I go seek out flowers, wine glasses, landscapes, and then I proceed to do shoot them as sucky as possible to ensure that I get the suckiest photo possible.

What was the best photograph you never took because you screwed it up, forgot your camera, left on the lenscap, etc.?

More than I care to remember mostly due to not having my camera handy. Of course when I have my camera I always drive by and think I can shoot it some other time.

What is your favorite lens and why?

Nikkor 50mm 1.8. Sharp, fast, light, and dirt cheap.

Would you still enter challenges if there were only comments and no scoring?

No, then DP Challenge would be called Treklens and as I said before I enjoy public humiliation.

On a 1-10 scale, how aggressive is your competitive nature?

5 - if it was any higher I wouldn't have an excuse for sucking so bad. At least with a "5" I can still say I don't care. That and it matches my sucky average.

Define tongue-in-cheek:

If I knew how to do that I wouldn't done so sucky on the cliché challenge.

What is the dominant 'mood' conveyed by your favorite photos and why do you think this is?

If amateur was a mood I would say that would be dominate in my photos for obvious reasons.

If you had to choose, would you rather be a wine glass, a flower, or a water droplet? Why?

A wine glass - I would finally make into the DP Challenge top ten ;b.

What person in your life is most supportive and positive about your photography habit and how do you thank them?

My wife. I thank her by telling her that at least she isn't a member of Team Suck.

Is life more like Stilton, Brie or Horseradish Cheddar? Why?

Horseradish Cheddar - Like life starts off fun and kind of interesting then you realize you eating crap.

What is the most ridiculous extent you have gone to a Challenge entry?

Too many to remember what the most ridiculous was.

Do you delete the digital photos you won't use?

Some - it depends.

If you had to say that photography was EITHER art or science, which would it be and why?

Science - anybody can call themselves an artist unless you truly understand the relationship of light to film or a digital sensor you can't take good, or in my case, sucky photos.

Have you ever pressed the shutter with a part of your body that was not your finger? Describe.

My tongue - I wanted to know what the object responsible for so much suckiness tasted like.

What one thing could make you a better photographer?

If everyone that was ever a good photographer suddenly had a lobotomy.

What subject have you stopped photographing simply because it won't score well on dpc?

None - usually I shoot and then post. Why do you think I am a member of Team Suck?

You are selling a book of your photography. Your name is not on the cover. What will you title it so that people will know what to expect, and still be inspired to open it?

Memoirs of the Mediocre

You do NOT want to miss this! It's got nice long thoughtful answers... like a real interview! I give you...

melismatica!!

Why do you insist on taking photographs?

It's a means by which to record my environment and the people around me the way I see them. I realized recently, photography is a form of journaling for me. I'm always beginning new written journals only to abandon them after a few days. Knowing that I've got a pictorial journal of my life comforts me.

What name do you call your camera?

I wish I had an answer for that. Alas, my poor camera is merely a nameless tool to me. How about, "Whyarentyouadslranydslrwilldo?"

What is the secret of your suckiness?

Perserverence. Or perverseness.

What was the best photograph you never took because you screwed it up, forgot your camera, left on the lenscap, etc.?

There was a fight between a guy and a couple at a gas station a few summers ago during one of those times when lines formed for really cheap gas. I had my camera and jumped out of the car to take the shot but because my camera is just a point-and-shoot I really couldn't capture the feel of the scene. I wanted to show the long line of cars with the fracas at the head of it but the fracas was too far off in the frame to really make an impact. I did get the line of cars with the handpainted sign reading "Cheap Gas". But without the drama of the argument it just didn't work. I blame my camera but probably I was too inhibited to get close enough to the action.

What is your favorite lens and why?

You are hitting where it hurts with that question. I have a point-and-shoot with an integrated lens. When I shot film, I really enjoyed my wide-angle zoom. I'm not a tech-head so I couldn't tell you the focal length and speed of it. Or even the brand name. I liked the wide-angle for capturing stuff going on in the periphery of the frame.

Would you still enter challenges if there were only comments and no scoring?

Yes.

On a 1-10 scale, how aggressive is your competitive nature?

I'm pretty meek. I would have to say 4.

What is the dominant 'mood' conveyed by your favorite photos and why do you think this is?

If you mean my favorite photos by other photographers, I would have to say I love to see a photo that captures the funnier side of the human experience. I like a photo to have wit and humour. Or else, a sense of joy without pandering to sentiment. I despise bathos. I also like photos that capture the mundane moments of life in a way that elicits an emotional response in the viewer. I really enjoy the work of photographers like Elliot Erwitt and Gary Winograd.I think this is because although I'm fairly cynical, I'm basically an optimist. I like to see the lighter side of things. I'd like to capture that sort of thing in my own photos but I think I've only managed it a few times. I think, in spite of myself, my best work tends to be photos that closely observe pattern, color, texture--that sort of thing. I have a good eye for design and my mind's eye is always interpeting my environment in those terms. I find myself drawn to these subjects. And a fence or a barn door don't move around when you want to take their picture. I've recently been experimenting with a vintage Polaroid camera, taking black and white prints of things in my back yard. Some of them have turned out quite beautiful, I think.

In terms of candid work, at the moment, I'm a bit hampered by the lag-time of point-and-shoot digital technology. I think in my earlier days of film work I was more successful at capturing decisive moments.

This is one of my better film candids from years ago.

This is a digital candid I like a lot.

What activities besides photography help you vent your creative urges?

Cooking, making music (guitar/keyboards,singing), knitting, and occasionally drawing and painting.

Who's yo daddy?

The man who passed on to me his sense of humour, his love of music, and my first camera.

Is life more like Stilton, Brie or Horseradish Cheddar? Why?

There is something called 'horseradish cheddar'? How have I missed this?

What is the most ridiculous extent you have gone to a Challenge entry?

I'm pretty lazy so it hasn't been too ridiculous. Probably, taping colored cellophane to my car's headlights. That was my highest scoring entry to date so maybe I should go to extremes more often.

What one thing could make you a better photographer?

Patience and planning.

What subject have you stopped photographing simply because it won't score well on dpc?

Toilet paper. Just kidding. I don't pander. I'll never stop shooting what I like. That's why I suck.

You are selling a book of your photography. Your name is not on the cover. What will you title it so that people will know what to expect, and still be inspired to open it?

Someone clicked their heels three times and now we have a nice surprise!

Please pay attention to the man behind the curtain:

An Interview with Posthumous

What is your favorite lens and why?

I like my Sigma because it goes wide. You know what I
mean?

Would you still enter challenges if there were only
comments and no scoring?

That depends on the comments. Perhaps if I could
script the comments beforehand, so I would know they
were witty, poignant and accurate. But don’t worry I’d
make a nice variety. Some people would love my photo,
others would find it merely disturbing. Rikki would
request to make it his profile photo.

On a 1-10 scale, how aggressive is your competitive
nature?

3 more than yours!

Define tongue-in-cheek:

That’s when the challenge is “cheeks” but there’s this
strange hair growing from the cheek and just when it’s
too late you realize you don’t want your tongue in
there!

What is the dominant 'mood' conveyed by your favorite
photos and why do you think
this is?

It’s the mood between confusion and serenity. It’s the
mood of that moment when you are stepping through the
veil.

What activities besides photography help you vent your
creative urges?

Making movies, painting, drawing, writing poetry and
prose, trying to get the dog to poop before bedtime.

Who's yo daddy?

I have two daddies: Wallace Stevens and Pablo Picasso.

If you had to choose, would you rather be a wine
glass, a flower, or a water droplet? Why?

I'd rather be a water droplet, because people would think they
were seeing right through me but everything would be upside down.

What person in your life is most supportive and
positive about your photography habit and how do you
thank them?

My wife and I thank her by letting her use my camera…
oh sorry… our camera.

Is life more like Stilton, Brie or Horseradish
Cheddar? Why?

Brie because it’s soft and you can sink right into it
and get lost.

What is the most ridiculous extent you have gone to for a
Challenge entry?

Making a bicycle out of Jell-O. Do you know how hard
that is??

Do you delete the digital photos you won't use?

No, they’re collecting like a fungus garden on an old
piece of pumpernickel.

If you had to say that photography was EITHER art or
science, which would it be and why?

Photography is art because there is no scientific way
of determining why someone likes a photograph.

Have you ever pressed the shutter with a part of your
body that was not your finger? Describe.

Do thumbs count? I have a photograph that suggests I
once pressed the shutter with my stomach but I don’t
remember anything.

What one thing could make you a better photographer?

Affability. If I didn’t hate and fear people so much I
wouldn’t worry so much about photographing them.

What subject have you stopped photographing simply
because it won't score well on dpc?

Sometimes I eschew the landscape, but only when it’s
dnmc.

You are selling a book of your photography. Your name
is not on the cover. What will you title it so that
people will know what to expect, and still be inspired
to open it?
