I really like my Sigma 18 - 125mm so decided to go ahead and get the Sigma 18-200mm. Here are some sample picture I took out in my back yard yesterday. They aren't scientific or anything. I just stood in one place with the camera in Aperture Priority at 5.6 and focused on the main subject and zoomed the lens in a bit and took another shot without changing the focus point.

All the pictures have just been resized, no other editing. I think they turned out pretty well for not trying for proper metering or anything. In the information on each picture the focal length is noted. The lens feels very well built and will be a nice walk around lens with 18-200mm. I'm sure it's not at good as the "L" lens and purists would find fault with it but for general picture taking I think it's pretty nice.

What's the f/ rating on that lens?

Does it have USM/HSM focusing?

Do they make an IS version?

How much did it run ya?

Here's the link to the lens at BH Photo where I ordered it:

Sigma 18-200mm

You can read all about it there by clicking the various tabs about "features" and "specifications". It was $399 which isn't too bad.

I like it quite a bit - going to use it on my camera tomorrow as a walk around lens looking for People Pictures.

Thanks for the info Sammie. I've love my Sigma 18-125 and I've been eyeing that lens, waiting for some test reports.

How about posting some 100% crops of some brick walls or newsprint or something so we can see the intrinsic sharpness.

Please keep us up to date as you use it if there are downsides versus the 18-125. Is it bigger? Slower to focus? Not as sharp?

I'll take some brick wall and newspaper pictures today or tomorrow, Neil, and I'll try taking the exact same picture with the 18-125 and 18-200. So far, just testing it out in the back yard it seems to focus and work exactly the same as the 18-125 which pleases me a lot.

Here's a picture of both lens side by side. They are almost exactly the same size - the 18-200 is a TINY (almost microscopic) bit longer.

Thanks. Hey I like the red ring--A sigma L lens wannabe?

Sammie--congrats on the ribbon. Did you do it with your new lens? That would be a good testimonial--you should post lens info with the photo.

I'd be very interested in seeing some 100% crops. Does it have strong CA? How sharp is it wide open at 18, 50, 100, 200?

Don't like the red ring. Red rings should be reserved for Canon L's.

Sammie, I don't have the new Sigma lens, but I have the Tamron 18-200mm. Which I just purchased and took to my recent business trip to Cancun, Mexico. I was using the Tamron 28-300mm, but I was losing the wider angel area's. It great when lens manufacturer's try to compete against earch other. Price wise, it was very close. Thank you, Neil, for the congratulations. I still can't believe it.

I didn't use the Sigma 18-200mm for this picture - didn't have it at the time. The lens I used was the Canon 75-300mm IS - that is the longest lens I have.

Will post some more pictures and 100% crops today. Didn't have time to do any brick wall or print studies yet but will get to them probably tomorrow.

Your pictures are nice, Zag. That 18-200mm length is really handy. My favorite is the chairs. Was the sky really that gold/yellow color or did you do that in post processing. The samples I posted from the Sigma 18-200 weren't processed except to resize so they don't look artistic or anything!

Now you guys have me interested in the Sigma 18-200. I'm a little skeptical of such a large zoom range, but your sample pics are intriguing. I'm saving my pennies now for the Canon 70-200 f4, and would later supplement that with something to fill in on the wider end.

I'd love to see more samples from the Sig18-200 so post away happy owners!

Here are some more photos with the TAMRON 18-200mm lens.
And yes I do color correct in PS CS. The natural colors are there, but I tweaked the primary colors up.

Here are a few more samples with 100% crops. The pictures of my dog, Gidget, aren't very pretty but I think they are a very good test of focus and sharpness. She is VERY difficult to take a picture of - her fur just resists autofocus and I can very rarely take a picture of her without using manual focus. She is also never still unless she is sleeping so I very rarely get any clear pictures of her.

There is commentary about the focal length, aperture, ISO and shutter speed listed with each picture. The full size pictures have had no editing except to resize. The 100% crops have had NO editing at all.

Will get to some more interesting ones tomorrow!
