you all know that the easy way to have a good plastiface is to use the dedicated photoshop filter; is it allowed in a standard editing? Often I can't comprehend what is borderline, allowed or prohibited
Thanks

I look forward as I have no idea which filters are allowed and which not, if any.

That's for the voters to decide.

And this is where this place can simply drive you away, because no one responsible for validating an entry will ever go on the record about where the borders exist - until when the voters decided that borders weren't crossed but an entry gets DQ'd and arguments ensue. God, it makes me remember precisely why I walked away a year ago.

But with DPL starting soon, no-one wants a DQ.

1.) Almost *anything* is allowed in Standard Editing, as long as you don't move or create things wholesale, and as long as the source images are shot in the required timeframe. There's literally no restrictions on any specific tools - none.

2.) Voters do not decide what is DQable, the SC does. Voters can raise a question, e.g. "Was that elephant really in the original frame?" The SC applies the rules.

I urge you to look at recent DQs. In the vast majority of cases, the photog could not (or did not) submit an original for validation. That says something. Almost no one gets DQ'd for rules violations anymore. The rules must be working pretty well.

ETA: OK, I lied, there is one tool that arguably is not legal, either in Standard or Extended; the Text tool. But I think the "no added text" rule is pretty self-explanatory.

Thank you. Wouldn't it be nice if we got this kind of feedback from the SC?!

Well, you WOULD have if you'd waited for me to wake up :-) But Kirbic's ex-SC and he's nailed it.

Let me make one thing clear, in case it isn't already. It's not up to the voters to decide what's DQable, it's up to them to decide what they're willing to put up with, in terms of image manipulation. We decided over a year ago that this gray area in the rules where "we can't define what's illegal but we'll know it when we see it" was bogus. Prior to that, the rules were trying to draw a line between what was "photography" and what was "photoshop", and this was getting more and more ridiculous. You, the players, knew it and we, the SC, knew it as well.

So we did something about it. That's how it's supposed to work, right?

Ha, Da Bear was hibernating!
And I completely agree that last year's rule update was a massive improvement in terms of clarity. I think the confusion, particularly on the part of some who have been absent for a while and don't have experience with the revised rules (or are blissfully unaware of the changes) is in assuming that it has been "status quo" around here. It has not.

Text is legal in Extended as long as it does not identify the photographer.

isn't this a just a repeat (or very similar) of the recent terrible pieface challenge?

Yup ... but I think part of the idea was to get it "out of the way" before the DPL challenges started -- and that we're going to try to have "reasonable" topics during the competition period.

It sort of is, yeah. I more or less had a brain fart as I was culling through buried challenge suggestions, which I do regularly. At least it's not scheduled during DPL :-)

I smelled it as soon as I saw it.

But, I'm rolling with it. Ha!
