SALLY MANN

Would a challenge on this american photographer be too contraversial ?

Although I do appreciate her work... some of it is quite compelling...

I wish we could just stick with challenge topics that everyone of all "specialties" can produce something for.

This is very specific.

I like to have topics that folks who like to get out and shoot on the streets... and folks who like to shoot landscapes or waterscapes... and folks who like to stay at home and shoot inside... can all enter and be valid.

Something like... "Blue"... or something else as open to all.

Def. not the kind of photography I like. provocatively staged. As teacher it's all what I do not wish the kids to become or be. Half of the pictures she did would put me, if doing the same, into trouble.

I moved this to "Challenge Suggestions" because it's definitely NOT a "Current Challenge"... Sally Mann's actually very interesting, as a photographer and a person: here's an in-depth piece on her and her work. But this isn't really something I can see as a valid challenge topic in DPC.

Probably not a good idea at all. Which is a shame as she's an amazing photographer and one of my favourites. Sadly, these days, society is just too close-minded, fearful and likely to spin into mindless lynch mobs at any moment. Certainly not the type of society I want my children to grow up in. Unlike GeorgesBogaert, I don't find her images to be provocatively staged at all - in fact, quite the opposite. I think they are very natural photographs of Mann's family life as it was in 80's. The French photographer Alain Laboile does a similar thing currently, documenting his family life in the south of France. But, I do agree it wouldn't be a good idea for DPC - apart from the controversy, as Lydia says, it's also quite restricted to those who have families (kids or ill husbands) or those who have access to corpses.
