The pink sheet! I loved them. So full of big, bold, beautiful...colorful life. Thanks for sharing Paul.

Love the geometry, bold colors, and negative space in Mirko's work. Inspirational stuff! I need to spend a more time looking through the winners, finalists, and jurors' picks. Thanks for the post.

Excellent series. Reminded me a lot of Harry Gruyeart who i'm a huge fan of. I love those towns full of high buildings, shadow and colour. There is nothing like that where I live although when I was in Italy last year i attempted something similar with this photo essay (already posted on DPC but my portfolio here is currently resting).

Ok -- trying to learn lens. What lens did you use for those shots and approx what focal length?

These all with the full frame Sony A7 and a little manual focus Voigtlander 21mm f4 lens. So, very wide indeed but i'm very partial to a 21mm. Takes a while to learn how to use as you have to get right in there and up close. Now i'm back on apsc Nikon I have the 14-24mm on the wide end to do the same job (although I miss the much smaller size)

Clive, I actually thought of your essay when seeing Mirko's photo narrative. I remembered your bold colors and deep shadows to fall into. I'm assuming he used a lens with reach, 100mm or more, based on the compression in his images. He's looking in and your looking out? Something like that. Two takes on a visually stunning place.

Last winter I was trying to capture some stuff like this. One attempt, different place and palette, that's gathering dust in a discard folder.

Cheers. Yea, there is definitely a difference in compression. I really love the immersive quality in his photos. It feels like those silhouettes and shadows are all around, moving both in front of an behind the viewer. Makes my essay look a bit flat in comparison. Very interesting how the difference focal lengths contribute to that.

Thanks Paul for the interesting post. His photographs remind me of Alex Webb's work.
