My BIL recently died after a long fight against the "Big C" He was a man of passion, and strong defender of all that he loved and believed in. We all have them those we loved Take a photograph that shows what he/ she means to you NOT A Portrait, but something that you would always associate with Him/her.

That's not entirely clear to me from the description. Tell us in a little more detail what exactly you're envisioning, and I can help with the shorter description. Also, would "Remembrance" work better as a title?

Thanks Bear rememberence works well, My idea is what is your best memory, maybe the chair theysat in, Afavorite pipe/tobacco.. Its something like the smell of bread baking andcoffee brewing, favorite fishing rod or place they loved, Like a perfume or aftershave!!! hard to put your finger on. A favorite possession or gift you have. Anything that brings a strong memory back,. its an abstract sort of thing, I have a couple of Small tripods, I use them lots, a gift from a good photographer friend, remember him and the good times when I use or see them.

My BIL was a great gardener so my memories of him are in that area !!

OK, let me think on it. It's a great concept. I know there's an actual, specific word for these triggers, but I can't remember it (ironic, eh?). I bet Posthumous will know it...

Whatever you call it, I like the idea.

The word "reminiscence" comes to mind for me.

there's memento mori but that's a bit macabre. perhaps just memento.

I like the idea. I do think it might help to clarify or specify the topic. If simply to avoid being a free study.
e.g. "Use photography to share a memory of someone that has passed. Help the viewer know more about that special someone".
Maybe add whether animals AND people are acceptable subjects.

understand OP's stipulation of 'not a portrait' but i could envision blending an old photograph of the remembered person in the mix if it were extended editing.

I don't know of any word specifically for the dead, but there is "keepsake"

I went looking for the word I thought I wasn't remembering and didn't find it, but DID come across this in a piece by Mary C. Lamia posted in 2012 to the Psychology Today web site:

Originally posted by Mary C. Lamia:

Most emotional memories are the result of cued recall. A certain date may trigger an emotional memory such as in the anniversary of a loss. But also anything that is connected to your senses may be a cue that can ignite emotional recall. While walking past the perfume counter of a department store you may remember someone who smelled delicious, or, on the other hand, a person whose over-use of scented products was repugnant to you. A certain place may evoke a memory of being there in the past and the pleasant or unpleasant emotions attached to that experience. Your visceral response to a particular song may be a reminder of the emotion you felt toward someone with whom it is associated.

Holding onto certain possessions may be a way to activate the recall of emotion. Yet it is not simply emotional memory that is triggered by an object but also the connection you had with the person who is represented by it. For example, I happened to open a box that had been stored away for many years and found something that had belonged to my mother. Along with elation, momentary sadness was activated in me, as though I had somehow connected with her again. In a study of cherished objects as memorabilia, researchers found that most of the identified cherished objects were cherished for reasons other than their value as inducers of reminiscence and as specifically as reconstructive symbols (Sherman, 1991).

A bit long for a Challenge description, let alone a title. ;-)

FWIW, I'm good with Remembrance. It seems to fit the concept best, IMO. To my understanding, it's not limited to an object, nor something that necessarily belonged to the deceased - just something that reminds you of them. But it's kiwinick's suggestion, so his call, I would think.

Well heck, Artemus, I didn't INTEND it as a description. I just thought it was an interesting aside... :-)

I know - I was just razzin ya. It probably is interesting. I'll make a mental note to come back and read it sometime. :)

Had one 6 years ago ...

Remembrance

Like the idea though.

I'm not positive, but I think this one was published by his publishers, posthumously.
